Towards Food Security Policy for Canada's Social Housing Sector

Towards Food Security Policy for Canada's Social Housing Sector, by Abigail Friendly, looks at the need for a food security policy focusing on social housing providers and clients in Canadian cities. Notwithstanding Canada's prosperity and stated commitment to the right to food at national and international levels, the number of Canadians defined as food insecure reached 1.1 million in 2004. Food insecurity is increasingly being recognized as a crucial issue that lacks a coherent policy response by all orders of government in Canada. The concentration of low-income populations in social housing makes the problem especially acute for its residents and providers. Food security policy alternatives are suggested for social housing authorities in Canadian cities using the notion of community food security.

The UN food agency says it has had to start cutting rations to 4m people in Zimbabwe because of a lack of funds.

Nanotechnology Review Calls For Regulation

DUBLIN, Ireland─A new report published September 21 by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) on nanotechnology and its potential future applications in relation to food and food packaging makes a series of recommendations to ensure that consumers’ safety is protected in relation to developments in this area. The report, "The Relevance for Food Safety of Applications of Nanotechnology in the Food and Feed Industries," outlines the current and potential uses of nanotechnology and the possible implications for the safety of food. It identifies potential benefits of nanotechnology for both consumers and manufacturers, which include extending the shelf-life of products, as well as enhancing taste and texture characteristics of food.

UK Ruling Says Authorities Can Force You To Hand Over Your Encryption Key

A year ago, there was a legal ruling in the US that said an individual could not be forced to hand over their encryption key to encrypted data on a computer, since it violates the 5th amendment against self-incrimination. Over in the UK, they apparently also have protections against self-incrimination, but apparently it doesn't cover handing over your encryption key (thanks to JJ for sending over the link). Basically, the ruling is pretty close to the opposite of the US ruling. Basically, it found that an encryption key isn't speech but an independent "thing" that can be required to be turned over to authorities.

Zimbabwe central bank accuses banks, ZSE over economic meltdown

Harare - Zimbabwe's central bank on Thursday threatened to close a number of banks that it accuses of engaging in fraudulent activity and driving the country's economic meltdown. Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor Gideon Gono alleged several banks and the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) were involved in "fraudulent" activities that were pushing up the inflation rate.

Zimbabwe win bowl-out after tie

Zimbabwe earned a win they barely deserved, claiming a 3-1 victory in a bowl-out, after scrambling to a tie against Canada as the second day of T20 Canada tournament at King City produced a thrilling game. Zimbabwe, who slumped to 61 for 5 in the 11th over, recovered through a stand of 53 between Tatenda Taibu and Elton Chigumbura, but still needed 10 off the last over. Harvir Baidwan took two wickets in two balls, but Prosper Utseya and Tawanda Mupariwa squeezed nine off the next four balls, with Utseya run out off the final delivery trying to win the match.

Safety authority urges research into nanotechnology's use in food sector

Research into the risks of using nanotechnology in food is "urgently" needed before products containing food manipulating particles hit the Irish market, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has said. Little is known about the effects on the human body or the environment of this emerging food science and regulation of the industry is "deficient" a new FSAI report has found.

Zimbabwe Spin Their Way To Huge Win Over Canada

Zimbabwe captain Prosper Utseya led by example, taking three for 26, as Canada were spun out for just 75, the fifth-lowest score in Twenty20 Internationals to hand Zimbabwe third place in the Quadrangular Twenty20 in King City courtesy of a 109-run win.

Art You Can Sink Your Teeth Into

Last night, Zenith Community Arts Foundation (ZCAF) hosted its annual benefit at Zenith Gallery in Penn Quarter for the Capital Area Food Bank, “Food Glorious Food IV: Changing Courses.” Each year, the gallery brings together artists with tasty subject matter (John Pack, Cassandra Gillens, Anne Marchand), celebrated local restaurants and chefs (Jose Andrès, Restaurant Eve, Black Salt, Rasika, Citronelle), and happy guests for a party to launch the new food-art-themed 2009 calendar. Some highlights? John Pack’s edible-looking shell sculptures and Ron Schwerin’s Dali-esque still-lifes. The food was yummy, the art was too, and the calendars are still for sale through ZCAF. The corresponding exhibit at Zenith Gallery is up through Nov. 9.

EFSA consults on draft opinion on nanotechnologies and food and feed safety

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has launched a public consultation on its draft scientific opinion in relation to nanoscience and nanotechnologies and food and feed safety. Nanotechnologies involve the use of substances on a very small scale. This draft opinion focuses on engineered nano materials (ENM) that could be deliberately introduced into the food chain. It elaborates on approaches to risk assessment in this field and as such is not an assessment of any specific application of ENM.

Sued For Libel Over eBay Feedback

There's been plenty of criticism over eBay's feedback system over the years, and recently the company famously stopped allowing sellers to give feedback, since many sellers were using it as a weapon to force buyers to give good feedback, or risk getting bad feedback themselves. However, the latest outrage over eBay's feedback system seems a bit silly. A seller in the UK is suing a buyer for libel for his eBay feedback.

Ocado introduces non-food ranges

Ocado is to launch selected non-food ranges for delivery alongside its core grocery offer. The retailer plans to offer toys and books on its website, building on moves earlier in the year which added magazines and flowers to the offer. Ocado believes that there is great potential in the non-food category, having indicated its intention to develop a non-food offer in January 2008.

How to kill time on the Web now that the election's over.

The election's over, and you're bored. You're not really elated that your guy won or dismayed that he got crushed—really, you just wish you knew what to do with yourself. Over the last few months, you've spent hours each day poring over polls and reading every pundit. Now all that is done, and the Web seems so ... empty. Politico is full of stories about the transition team and RealClearPolitics is focused on 2012, but it's just not the same.

European efforts to determine potential nanotechnology impact on food safety

(Nanowerk Spotlight) The European Commission current assessment of nanotechnology applications to the food chain range from the almost certain (e.g., membranes, antibacterials, flavors, filters, food supplements, stabilizers) through to the probable (e.g., pathogen and contaminant sensors, environmental monitors, coupled sensing and warning devices, and remote sensing and tracking devices) to the improbable (e.g., 'creating unlimited amounts of food by synthesis at the atomic level').
