NSA Abused Wiretap Rights: Intercepted, Shared Private Calls Of Americans

Now that Congress has totally capitulated and allowed the administration's warrantless wiretapping program to go on without question, it should surprise no one that leaks are coming out highlighting how the program is regularly abused to spy on everyday Americans who are calling North America from the Middle East. In fact, two separate "intercept operators" have apparently come forward separately, and talked about listening in on perfectly innocent calls between two Americans -- exactly the scenario that the government insisted never happened. Specifically, General Hayden stated that conversations between Americans were not being intercepted: "It's not for the heck of it. We are narrowly focused and drilled on protecting the nation against al Qaeda and those organizations who are affiliated with it.

GOP Robo-Calls Hitting Ayres Issue

Republicans are making robo-calls (automated phone calls) in key states that raise Barack Obamas association with William Ayers in harsh new language, the Politico reports. The latest in a series of calls claims Obama worked closely with Ayers, a former member of the Weather Underground, who killed Americans. The call, and similar ones, appear to be taking place in Wisconsin, New Mexico, Virginia, Maine, Florida, Missouri and North Carolina. CBS News confirmed that the RNC is behind the calls. The script:

Scotiabank drops option to buy U.S. bank assets

There's little chance Bank of Nova Scotia will take the plunge and buy a U.S. bank, its chief executive officer says. "Especially with what's developed over the last several weeks, it's very unlikely we would have any interest," CEO Richard Waugh said in an interview yesterday. When the value of U.S. financial institutions began to plummet, Scotiabank was one of the first to go shopping. It took a good look at Cleveland-based lender National City Corp. in the spring. But the U.S. government's recent decision to inject capital into American banks has nearly knocked Canadians out of the running in the race for U.S. regional assets, Mr. Waugh said. He acknowledges the cheap prices of U.S. banks did make the idea of an acquisition "intriguing." But after mid-September "when the American banks were given substantial amounts of equity from the

Forget robo-calls?Obama's text messages are this campaign's secret weapon.

Over the last couple of months, John McCain has launched at least a dozen automated phone campaigns that question Barack Obama's alleged ties to terrorists, among other charges. McCain, who was famously targeted by ugly robo-calls in the 2000 presidential primary, defends his effort as "totally accurate." Several Republicans have criticized the calls. Even Sarah Palin says she doesn't much like them. The Obama campaign has scolded McCain to stop the phone campaign; Obama has even launched his own robo-calls to denounce McCain's robo-calls.

US regulators shut two California banks

WASHINGTON (Agencies): U.S. regulators have shut down two banks based in Southern California, saying they fell victim to the acute distress in the housing market in that state. The failures of Downey Savings and Loan Association, based in Newport Beach, and PFF Bank & Trust of Pomona brought the number of U.S. bank failures this year to 22. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the U.S. agency that insures bank deposits, was appointed receiver of the two thrifts. U.S. Bank, based in Minneapolis, acquired all the deposits of both. Downey, the 23rd-largest U.S. savings and loan, had assets of $12.8 billion and deposits of $9.7 billion as of Sept. 30. PFF, the 38th-largest, had assets of $3.7 billion and $2.4 billion in deposits. Thrifts, also known as savings and loans, differ from other banks in that, by law, they must have at least 65 perc
