A company that specializes in online casinos announced this week it was taking a gamble on the US biofuels industry by launching a new web site devoted to the buying and selling of ethanol and biodiesel. USBiofuelsExchange.com (US-BX) opened Tuesday to "pre-register" producers, resellers and buyers, according to a statement from Diamond I, a development-stage company seeking to change its name to US BioFuels Exchange Inc. The official launch will probably take place later this summer after beta-testing, said James Kaufman, managing director of US-BX, in an interview. The site will seek to level the playing field for biofuels producers in the US, he said, noting "long-standing arrangements" between big producers and buyers have posed "constraints" for smaller players without the clout to lock in those sorts of deals.

Gamasutra is reporting that E3 is continuing its downward spiral due to forced downsizing of the show and limitations placed on attendees. While this year's show will be returning to the LA Convention Hall, the size of the show will still remain artificially small, which some are saying is stifling the spirit of the show. "These changes have in part been made to encourage the event as a more useful business event, but most of those interviewed in TheStreet.com article are critical of its continuing usefulness. 'E3 had much more of an impact when it was a show,' comments IGN.com vice president of games content Tal Blevins. 'The video game industry is about fun and entertainment, and we should have a show that reflects it.'"

amazon tivo TiVo and Amazon are looking at ways to bring product placements to a whole new level with the introduction of a new service called “Product Purchase.” With Product Purchase, viewers of certain television shows will be able to switch over to Amazon on their own TV sets and purchase items mentioned during the show directly from their remote control. No PC is needed for this to work - just shop from your chair or couch. The service launched today with support for four shows including the Oprah Winfrey Show, The Colbert Report, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Burn Notice. This service takes user/television show interactions to a whole new level and could bring new meaning to the impulsive shopping. Imagine, seeing a piece of clothing on Oprah’s show and then easily buying it the next minute on Amazon.

coondoggie writes "A US District Court today ordered a halt to the illegal practice of Canadian companies who the Federal Trade Commission said deceptively posed as domain name registrars and sent bogus bills to thousands of US small businesses and nonprofit organizations for their annual 'Website Address Listing.' The FTC said many of the businesses believed they would lose their Web site addresses unless they paid the bill, so they paid but in most cases the defendants did not provide domain registration services, did not provide the 'search optimization' services it claimed to provide, and bilked small businesses and nonprofits out of millions of dollars."

While the federal government of the US has dumped on us dreadful laws like the DMCA, when it comes time for it to follow those laws itself, it takes a pass. Why be inconvenienced like the rest of us? We've talked about how the US government likes to ignore patent law using either "state secrets" or "sovereign immunity" claims, and now it appears they're using that for copyright law as well. CAFC (Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit) has allowed the Air Force to dismiss a DMCA lawsuit lodged against them by claiming "sovereign immunity."

On Wednesday I received 72 e-mails, not counting junk, and only two text messages. It was a quiet day but, then again, I’m not including the telephone calls. I’m also not including the deafening and pointless announcements on a train journey to Wakefield – use a screen, jerks – the piercingly loud telephone conversations of unsocialised adults and the screaming of untamed brats. And, come to think of it, why not include the junk e-mails? They also interrupt. There were 38. Oh and I’d better throw in the 400-odd news alerts that I receive from all the websites I monitor via my iPhone.

One problem: It's not activated, so they can't actually dive into the phone's functions. But it's not like there's a whole lotta surprise there. [BGR]

Todd writes "I've been looking around at 'help wanted' advertisements for programming jobs, and almost all of them demand that you not only have professional experience, but also that you show samples of your work. This got me wondering; with the work product, trade secret, and non-disclosure laws/agreements, how exactly can you show work that you've done in a professional capacity to a prospective employer without violating the privacy of the company for which the code was written? For instance, I can't say I've written many BASH scripts (at least, not large ones) for myself personally, but the assortment of such scripts written for my current job is wide and varied indeed. I can't very well just deliver these scripts, or even small portions thereof, to third parties to help demonstrate my scripting prowess.

NEW YORK: It's hard work thinking about "[title of show]." Most musicals unveil themselves and then just sit there, in polite stasis, while we consider at our leisure their meaning and worth. Not "[title of show]," which proclaims its meta nature with its very name. This spill of show business mercury by the composer-lyricist Jeff Bowen and the librettist Hunter Bell changes each time it shows up on the New York scene, which it has often done over the past four years.

Does the iPhone 3G only cost $100 to make? Not on your life. Several sites have cited an article from EETimes, which in turn cites Portelligent, an Austin-based "teardown" analysis company that believes the iPhone 3G has a bill of materials around $100. Portelligent arrives at this conclusion based on a teardown of the original iPhone plus some speculation of what chips and components are included in the latest iPhone hardware, not on an actual teardown of the iPhone 3G. However, the mere cost of the materials used, even when accurate, is still not a good indicator of the cost to produce any manufactured device—especially not one as complex as an iPhone.

An anonymous reader writes "The folks at the Edge have published a short story by George Dyson, Engineer's Dreams. It's a piece that fiction magazines wouldn't publish because it's too technical and technical publications wouldn't print because it's too fictional. It's the story of Google's attempt to map the web turning into something else, something that should interest us. The story contains some interesting observations such as, 'This was the paradox of artificial intelligence: any system simple enough to be understandable will not be complicated enough to behave intelligently; and any system complicated enough to behave intelligently will not be simple enough to understand.' After you read it, you'll be asking the same question the author does — 'Are we searching Google, or is Google searching us?'"

As if we needed another reminder of why it is a good idea not to hand over personal data when it can be avoided: Apparently, a laptop containing unencrypted and highly sensitive data about 33,000 travelers was stolen. Governments like to make us believe that gathering more data about us helps security, companies tell us that by handing over some personal information they can improve service and user experience.

Tibor the Hun writes "According to Gartner and IDC, Apple now has between 7.8 and 8.5% of market share. While those numbers are not astonishing, they are not insignificant, and their growth does not seem to be slowing down. Will the pearly gates of acceptance open up for them once they reach the magic 10%, and will that have a positive effect on desktop Linux adoption? Hard to tell, but it's good to see that normal people (not just us geeks) are choosing to go with a different OS, rather than staying with the headache-inducing Windows."

India begin their three-Test series at a venue where they have suffered their worst loss against Sri Lanka; the last time these two sides played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, India were trounced by an innings and 77 runs. Sri Lanka have won just three of their 26 Tests against India but won the previous home series against the same opponents 2-1. US exports of titanium dioxide -- the naturally occurring oxide of titanium -- will grow by 21% to $1.5 billion this year, and could top $2 billion next year, as the commodity rebounds on strong sales of nanotechnology-based products, according to market reseach firm SBI.
