Terror pledge after Pakistan bomb

Pakistan's president has pledged to fight the "cancer" of terrorism after a suicide bomb killed at least 54 people in the capital, Islamabad.

Panic grips LHC after bomb hoax

LAHORE: Panic gripped litigants and lawyers present at the Lahore High Court (LHC) when the bomb disposal squad (BDS) started searching for explosives on Thursday afternoon. The BDS arrived at the court after the police emergency help line received a telephone call about the presence of a bomb in the LHC, the Anarkali Police Station house officer (SHO) said, adding that the LHC security staff and the BDS had been informed about the call. However, no explosive material was found during the two-hour search operation. The SHO said that the police were trying to trace the unidentified caller who had made the hoax call through telephone number 0345-7082042. However, he added, the number had been switched off. Security personnel deployed at the LHC became more vigilant after the hoax call.

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Monday launched the Economic Diplomacy Initiative after a meeting with the heads of Chinese companies operating businesses and projects in Pakistan. “The meeting focused on undertaking increased investments and projects in Pakistan, and the pre-visit preparations for the president’s forthcoming visit to China,” according to a statement issued by the Foreign Office spokesperson. PCB sacks cricket coach Geoff Lawson

The Pakistan Cricket Board has sacked the national cricket team’s coach Geoff Lawson here on Friday. The former Australian pace-man had assumed the position of coach just 15 months before, the board's spokesman said. "Geoff Lawson has been sacked. He has been given three months' severance pay," PCB spokesman Raza Rashid told media. The move comes just three days after new PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said that Lawson's contract would not be renewed next year, on the grounds that Pakistan had "no utility" for him. The 50-year-old Lawson was appointed Pakistan coach in July last year after Pakistan's first-round defeat in the World Cup in the Caribbean in March.

LAHORE: Pakistan cricket chief selector Salahuddin Ahmad resigned Wednesday just hours after the federal sports ministry issued the notification regarding the appointment of former Test cricketer Ijaz Butt as the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Salahuddin, a former Pakistan Test batsman, told reporters that he wanted to provide room to the new PCB chief to appoint the person of his choice as the new chief selector. “I welcome the appointment of Mr Ijaz Butt as the new PCB chief and wish him all the best,” he said.

KARACHI: Pakistan will meet hosts Canada and Sri Lanka will play Zimbabwe in the opening round of an inaugural four team Twenty20 tournament in Toronto, Pakistan-based organisers announced on Wednesday. The tournament, scheduled to run from October 10-13, will give the cricket-starved Pakistan team some much-needed playing time after the Champions Trophy was postponed over security fears here last month. “In a league format all four teams will play each other once and the top two teams will play the final,” Nauman Nabi, chairman of the organising company Sports International Marketing, told AFP. There will be a play-off for third position before the final on October 13, he added. The tournament in Canada, originally scheduled for August, was delayed because the West Indies team was not available.
