As we predicted in Issue 127 of The Mobile World Briefing, the number of mobile connections in Pakistan surpassed the 90m mark during the third quarter with an end-September total of 90.20m. However, quarterly growth stood at just 2.4%, the lowest rate recorded this century, and the monthly gains in August (238k) and September (640k) were the two lowest seen since monthly reporting began in 2005. Growth has been slowing in Pakistan for some time, partly as a result of the penetration rate, which reached 52.0% at the end of September; this is the highest rate in the sub-continent by some margin, with India and Bangladesh both below 30%.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka vie for Twenty20 title in Canada

KARACHI: Pakistan will meet hosts Canada and Sri Lanka will play Zimbabwe in the opening round of an inaugural four team Twenty20 tournament in Toronto, Pakistan-based organisers announced on Wednesday. The tournament, scheduled to run from October 10-13, will give the cricket-starved Pakistan team some much-needed playing time after the Champions Trophy was postponed over security fears here last month. “In a league format all four teams will play each other once and the top two teams will play the final,” Nauman Nabi, chairman of the organising company Sports International Marketing, told AFP. There will be a play-off for third position before the final on October 13, he added. The tournament in Canada, originally scheduled for August, was delayed because the West Indies team was not available.

LAHORE: Pakistan cricket chief selector Salahuddin Ahmad resigned Wednesday just hours after the federal sports ministry issued the notification regarding the appointment of former Test cricketer Ijaz Butt as the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Salahuddin, a former Pakistan Test batsman, told reporters that he wanted to provide room to the new PCB chief to appoint the person of his choice as the new chief selector. “I welcome the appointment of Mr Ijaz Butt as the new PCB chief and wish him all the best,” he said.

TORONTO (APP): Opener Shoaib Khan slammed a maiden half century and Fawad Alam grabbed three top wickets as Pakistan topped Quadrangular Canada Twenty20 International Cricket Championship league with a comfortable seven wickets success over Zimbabwe at Maple Leaf Ground, King City here on Sunday. Wanted: new chairman for Pakistan Cricket Board, CRI

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) _ Former Pakistan captain Intikhab Alam has urged the country's cricket board to appoint a new chairman "as soon as possible" to salvage the national team's international season. "It's been almost a month now that the Pakistan Cricket Board is without a chairman, it's absolutely imperative for the president to announce the chairman as soon as possible," Alam said Monday.

PCB sticks to hosting India cricket series in Pakistan

ABU DHABI: Pakistan cricket officials Saturday termed shifting of their home series against India to neutral venues as “mere speculation”, saying preparations are at full swing in their country. India is scheduled to tour Pakistan in January-February to play a side game, three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 but the tour is already in doubt over the security situation in the host country. But Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief operating officer Salim Altaf voiced confidence the series would go ahead as per the schedule. “We have not heard anything from the Indian Board and until we hear something contrary, Indian team will play the first match on the 9th January in Hyderabad and the first Test starts on the 13th in Karachi,” Altaf told reporters.

Abu Dhabi is ready to host an India-Pakistan series after its drive to attract high-profile sporting events brought it the final race in next year's Formula One championship, an official said Thursday. India is scheduled to tour Pakistan early next year but the tour is already in doubt over security fears in the host country, raising the prospect of the series being played at a neutral venue such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE). PCB sacks cricket coach Geoff Lawson

The Pakistan Cricket Board has sacked the national cricket team’s coach Geoff Lawson here on Friday. The former Australian pace-man had assumed the position of coach just 15 months before, the board's spokesman said. "Geoff Lawson has been sacked. He has been given three months' severance pay," PCB spokesman Raza Rashid told media. The move comes just three days after new PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said that Lawson's contract would not be renewed next year, on the grounds that Pakistan had "no utility" for him. The 50-year-old Lawson was appointed Pakistan coach in July last year after Pakistan's first-round defeat in the World Cup in the Caribbean in March.
