eBay Negotiating Minority Stake in South Koreas GMarket

eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) is in talks to acquire a minority stake in GMarket, a South Korean online auctioneer. The talks are with Interpark Corp., the Korean portal that owns 37 percent of the company. A spokesperson from eBay told AP that there was no certainty a deal would be reached or that it would be approved by South Korean regulators—eBay already owns a South Korean competitor, the aptly named Internet Auction. No deal terms have been announced, although shares of NASDAQ-listed GMarket shot up over 14 percent on the news. In 2006, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) took a 10 percent stake in GMarket, so they’re a beneficiary of this as well.

South Korean LG Electronics posts profits up in second quarter

Seoul - South Korean concern LG Electronics posted profits for the second quarter up 84 per cent on the basis of strong demand for mobile phones and flat-screen television sets, in figures published Monday. Russian news blogger shot dead

A news website owner in Russia's Ingushetia region has been shot dead after being detained by police. Magomed Yevloyev, who ran Ingushetiya.ru, was arrested when he flew into Nazran airport in southern Russia. He was later found outside a hospital with fatal gunshot wounds. Yevloyev was a vocal critic of the region's Kremlin-backed administration. (Via Cnet)

Appellate Court Confirms Ruling Against Fake South Korean Art Professor

SEOUL—The Seoul Western District appellate court has confirmed the ruling against the South Korean professor sentenced last March for faking a Yale doctorate and embezzling museum funds, the Associated Press reports. Shin Jeon-ah will serve 18 months in jail for using her fake degree to obtain a professorship at Seoul's Dongguk University and get financial sponsorship at a museum where she worked. She has seven days to appeal.

Reports from South Africa suggest that a cybercrime syndicate there has defrauded the government of more than 199 million Rand (UKP £12.8 million) in a series of spyware infection-driven frauds. The frauds, which were revealed on Tuesday by the South African Minister for Finance and Economic Development, has resulted in 32 arrests in connection with more than 80 fraud counts.
