Why it's not a good idea for politicians to use personal e-mail accounts.

Sometime on Tuesday, an unknown hacker gained access to gov.palin@yahoo.com, an e-mail account that Sarah Palin has used for personal and possibly also state business in Alaska. The hacker posted the e-mail password to the /b/ group of 4Chan, a discussion site known as a haven for Web "trolls," and for a brief while, Palin was an open book. 4Chan readers trudged through her inbox, saving screen shots of her correspondence with friends and supporters, a list of her frequent contacts, and pictures of her family. Then, a good Samaritan reset Palin's password, triggering a Yahoo security measure that alerted Palin to the breach. Soon after, gov.palin@yahoo.com and another account Palin has reportedly used to conduct official business—gov.sarah@yahoo.

How Sarah Palin's Email Got Hacked

Sarah Palin might be the first Vice Presidential candidate to get her online email account hacked, but she's not the first person to have this problem and certainly isn't the first to get hacked using information readily available on Google and Wikipedia. Palin's experience goes to show you how relatively easy it is for someone to brute force and social reverse engineer the information needed to crack a password or security question. In this case, the purported hacker actually told us how he/she (it was an individual, btw) did it using Google and Wikipedia. Here's an excerpt from the hacker's own words, thanks to a blog post by Michelle Malkin.

First review of Silent Hill: Homecoming is not good

A snippet and score from the first review of Silent Hill: Homecoming is in, posted from Official Xbox Magazine over at Metacritic. The outlook? Not good. The snippet reads "From its leaden, cheap-shots-aplenty combat to its wild-goose chase through gray, same-y hallways filled with useless, placebo doorways to a story that takes much too long to get off the ground, its entire first half feels like a death march through a clunky hot mess." and scores the game 65/100. Although they presumably played with the 360 version, I doubt that there's a big difference between PS3 and 360 editions. Of course, that's only one review, and I expect we'll see others soon, but it's not a good start.

First Whole Cancer Genome Sequenced

dooling writes "A paper detailing the sequencing of the first human cancer genome will be published in the 6 November 2008 issue of Nature. This is not only the first cancer genome published, it is the first female genome as well. You can read the paper's abstract, DNA sequencing of a cytogenetically normal acute myeloid leukaemia genome, or the story in Science News. This issue of Nature also has articles on the sequencing of the first African and Asian genomes. The sequencing in all three articles was done using the Illumina Genome Analyzer, one of the massively parallel, next-generation genome sequencing platforms."

Blog Buzz: Reviews of Palin's and Biden's Debate Performances, Schwarzenegger Needs a Loan for California

Sarah Palin's performance at last night's vice presidential debate gets mixed reviews from bloggers, who are generally split along party lines. Those on the left say it was clear her answers were rehearsed and consisted of talking points that she was clearly reading off her prepared notes. This, liberals say, and the fact that moderator Gwen Ifill did not ask follow-up questions, saved Palin from crashing and burning and gaffe-ing, like she did in recent interviews. But while she sounded more competent, Political Animal, Matthew Yglesias, and TPM say she still had a few whoppers. Michael Crowley says she did nothing to hurt herself but little to help John McCain. Conservative bloggers thought that while Ifill was biased toward Joe Biden, Palin still managed to pull off a sparkling, terrific performance (even a "grand slam" for the first h

Will The DOJ's Interpretation Of Email Privacy Make It Difficult To Prosecute Palin Email Hacker?

While plenty of folks are talking about the cracking of Sarah Palin's personal email account, the EFF is noting that the Justice Department's own interpretation of email privacy laws may actually make it difficult to prosecute the hacker under the most obvious statute, the Stored Communications Act. You see, since the DOJ would prefer that your email not be considered private, it has interpreted emails that you've opened, but not deleted, as not being subject to the SCA. That's thanks to a somewhat contorted reading of the law that suggests that an opened email is no longer considered either in temporary or intermediate storage -- nor is it considered saved for backup purposes. Those happen to be the two requirements under the law. Thus, if the hacker accessed emails that Palin had already read, the DOJ may have trouble using the SCA, sin

Senator Palin? No, Not Her. The Dude!

We all know that Alaska's Sen. Ted Stevens, now convicted of political corruption charges, has been urged to step down by many, including John McCain and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. That is the root of the speculation that Gov. Palin might want to appoint herself as Sen. Palin, should Sen. Stevens step down -- although there is no sign that the Senate's senior Republican senator is inclined to do so.

Esquire: With iPhone, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is making his final bid for immortality

"First, he is mortal. Second, the odds against him are not only actuarial -- the inevitable odds we all face -- they are clinical. Four years ago, he announced in a memo to his employees that he had undergone surgery, that the surgery was for the removal of a malignant tumor, that the tumor was on his pancreas, and that the surgery was, as he put it, successful. An exceptional man who specializes in exceptionalizing himself -- he has been an economic force for thirty years, and it's still hard to put him in a category, or even to say exactly what he does -- he responded to his disease by exceptionalizing it as well. He was at pains to say that the pancreatic cancer he had was not that kind of pancreatic cancer -- not the kind that kills you, without much room for exception, in six months or so -- but rather 'a very rare form of pancreatic

Blog Buzz: McCain-Palin Crowds Get Angry, Troopergate Report, Barack Obama and ACORN

The recent rowdiness among McCain-Palin supporters at rallies has drawn more scorn from liberal bloggers today, who say that John McCain and Sarah Palin are encouraging these "festivals of hate" at which supporters call Obama a "traitor" and shout "Off with his head!" Other bloggers say the GOP campaign is "appalling" and wonder if the "toxic cocktail" of "hate, fear, and ignorance" will pay off come Election Day. TPM bloggers are outraged that McCain and Palin have not condemned the behavior of some of their supporters and say that the candidates are responsible for creating the hysteria. Michael Crowley at The New Republic reminds us that Democrats exhibited similar rage toward Bush in 2004. Ann Althouse says there's nothing wrong with "candidates attacking their opponents or crowds becoming enthusiastic.

Ed the head

Not too many writers have scored a century on first-class debut, had their first two books shortlisted for literary prizes, earned a first in history at Cambridge, led an English county, and played Test cricket for England - all while still in their 20s. Ed Smith is clearly special - and only the fact that he does not (yet) hold the world record for the long jump, or is a few service games away from being the world table tennis champion, keeps comparisons with CB Fry at bay. Some day he hopes to write a book about Wagner, though.
