Fed ends 7-month run of rate cuts

WASHINGTON - Worried about rising prices for gasoline, groceries and other things? Federal Reserve policymakers are, too.

Send SMS for Free via AIM on iPhone

I expected that iPhone 3G service from AT&T would be more expensive compared to the original iPhone - $30 per month for data on top of voice service, a $10 increase), but the telco slipped in a poison profit pill by removing SMS text messaging from the plan. Instead, you can pay $5 per month for 200 messages (the amount included in the original iPhone plan); $15 per month for 1500 messages, or $20 per month for unlimited messages. If you sign up for a FamilyTalk plan, your choices are either $30 per month for unlimited or $0.20 per message.

Real-World 3G Monthly Cost With Taxes and Fees?

Kristl writes "I have called AT&T and walked into several AT&T stores to ask 'How much will an AT&T phone plan cost per month with taxes and fees and everything?'. No one can answer this question. They are evasive and become testy when I push them on it. Their answer is they can't tell me what the government is going to charge me as the fees can vary month to month, but I've been an AT&T customer for several years, and my taxes and fees have not varied more than a dollar in all of that time. So I question them: 'Can you just tell me what the taxes and fees will be for a 3G plan in California that has the basic calling plan, basic data plan, and the basic text plan?' I even do the math for them, that's $75. Okay AT&T, what are the taxes and fees on $75? Oh, they can't tell me that, as the taxes and fees can vary from month to month.

Run Windows Apps in Linux with Wine 1.0 (LifeHacker)

Wait, before I try this, will X program run okay in Wine? Good question—luckily, there's probably an answer. The Wine AppDB lists all the programs that run and don't run under Wine, and to what degrees. You'll see rankings randing from "Platinum" (runs pretty much flawlessly) to "Bronze" (some functions may not work at all, but otherwise runs) to "Garbage" (don't bother). In general, any apps that rely on other Windows apps or functions, or interact with the Windows desktop, won't work as well, if at all. That means Adam's super-useful Texter app doesn't work in Wine, for example.

dell x5 & linux

There might be a way to get linux on the axim. I have been searching for a few weeks and the best that I can come up with is using an X86 emulator to run DSL or Pupply linux. I was trying to get this to work on an hp ppc of mine but it looks like the compiled emulators may work on the axim's cpu and not the hp. So I have yet to test this. I do know that the same emulators have been ported to the Sony PSP. Users of this system have been able to run Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Puppy and DSL. This is the link to the PPC X86 emulators Mamaich home page. There is another option offered here Handhelds.org - Linux on Dell Axim X5. That option is to run a port of linux within the axim's default O/S. It only seems to run for about 15 min. before forcing the user to hard reset the device.
