Bush speech in Israel seen as attack on Obama

President George W. Bush speaking during a special session of the Israeli Parliament, in Jerusalem on Thursday.

Blog Buzz: Bush, Barack-as-Neville, GOP nominee Nostradamus and More

TNR's Christopher Orr says Bush's overseas apparent swipe at Barack Obama-as-Neville Chamberlain is both off-base and politically inept, though Mike Long at the conservative Political Mavens sees some irony in Democrats complaining about politics going beyond the water's edge. Matthew Yglesias says that Bush and his allies make the mistake of seeing Hitler in any foreigner they don't like. Power Line's Paul says that Obama—not named in the speech—is being defensive, while NRO's Jim Geraghty says that it's true that the Illinois senator has never advocated negotiating with terrorists—just their sponsors.

Obama pledges support for Israel

Barack Obama has pledged unwavering support for Israel in his first foreign policy speech since declaring himself the Democratic nominee for president.

Bush's 'Israel bias' angers Abbas

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has accused US President George W Bush of bias towards Israel, following a speech to the Israeli parliament last week.

Blog Buzz: Obama, McCain, Bush, and Coattails, Primary History, Iraq, and Nonproliferation

DailyKos's BarbinMD thinks that McCain is learning how hard it is to run with Bush in the atmosphere. Multiple mentions around the Web of Nick Beaudrot's spreadsheet trying to use demographics to predict Obama coattails in districts around the country. Meanwhile, Marc Ambinder reports that the Obama campaign is salting away quiet pledges from superdelegates to line up behind him in early June—after the DNC's credentials committee meets this weekend.

Obama's surveillance votespurs blogging backlash

Washington - Sen. Barack Obama's vote for a federal surveillance law that he had previously opposed has sparked a backlash from his online advocates, who had energized his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. In October, Obama had vowed to help filibuster an update of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) (Snip) Gov. Bill Richardson, a former Democratic presidential candidate and an Obama supporter, said Friday that the improvements to the bill allowed Obama to change his position.

Williams Tosses Softballs to Obama

Brian Williams, who slobbered over Barack Obama in their last interview in early January, did so again in a Thursday session excerpted on the NBC Nightly News. Back on January 7, Williams handed Obama a Newsweek with "Inside Obama's Dream Machine" as the cover story and wondered: "How does this feel, of all the honors that have come your way, all the publicity? Who does it make you think of? Is there, is there a loved one?" On Thursday, Williams didn't pose a single challenging question nor mention Jeremiah Wright in any of the ten questions aired, but pulled the same magazine stunt, this time holding up the new Time with a smiling Obama on the cover by the words, "And the Winner* Is..." Williams fondly recalled: "Last time we were together, I handed you a copy of Newsweek, it was the first time you'd held it in your hands with you on the

Surveillance Protest Group Tops Obama Website

A grassroots group of activists has been organizing on MyBo, Obama's official social networking portal, to protest the Senator's recent decision to back controversial legislation granting the President more spying powers. The effort hit a big milestone on Tuesday afternoon: It is now the largest self-organized group on Obama's website, topping networks that were launched over a year ago. The spying protest, "Senator Obama - Please Vote NO on Telecom Immunity – Get FISA Right," launched last week. (See Obama Network Organizes and Revolts Over Spying, The Nation.)

Campaign 08: Surveillance Protest Group Tops Obama Website

Using Magnets To Turn Off the Brain's Speech Center

An editor for the Telegraph, Roger Highfield, recently volunteered to allow a UK researcher to shut off the speech center of his brain with a high-powered magnetic pulse. Regular speech is controlled by a section of the brain called Broca's area. Once the precise location is determined in the subject, a magnetic pulse can temporarily disrupt speech without impairing other cognitive functions. The link contains a video in which you can watch Highfield stutter and twitch while attempting to recite a nursery rhyme. A later test shows that he's able to sing the rhyme without difficulty, since singing is controlled in a different part of the brain (as you may remember from Scott Adams' speech disorder). Researchers believe that the ability to stimulate or quell activity in specific areas of the brain may help in treating conditions like epilep

Obama launches economic attack on McCain

Barack Obama today launched a broad attack on his Republican presidential rival's economic proposals, saying John McCain promises "more tax cuts to the wealthy, more corporate tax breaks, more mountains of debt, and little to no relief for families struggling with the rising costs of everything from healthcare to a college education".

Will Israel Attack Iran?

There is a possibility that Israel may attack Iran's nuclear facilities within the year, senior defense officials in Washington told ABC News today.

Nuance Extends Speech Leadership with New Version of Nuance Mobile Speech Platform for BREW Developers

TMCNet: Nuance Extends Speech Leadership with New Version of Nuance Mobile Speech Platform for BREW Developers

Blog Buzz: Tuesday's Speeches and Hillary's Future

TPM's Josh Marshall: McCain's was "frighteningly" bad. There are plenty of poor reviews of the McCain speech to be found today, even among people who liked the message. (By the way, what was up with that green backdrop? Is the McCain campaign hoping bloggers insert their own backdrops on the green screen?) Clinton's speech comes in for a lashing in several corners as well. (Though former Clinton ghost David Kusnet, also writing at The Plank, defends Mrs. Clinton's speech, saying that it wasn't unusual so much as the overall situation.) DemFromCT at Daily Kos rounds up the reviews of the Barack Obama and McCain speeches, and it's Obama in a landslide. Though there were plenty of critics on substance, and NRO's Rick Brookhiser runs down the list of eloquent American pols who never spoke from the bully pulpit.

Blogtalk: Obama's F.I.S.A. Vote

Obama not only sold out the American people with his vote on FISA, but he lied to the people like me who supported his campaign with my time and money. Look at the Democrats who voted against FISA, like Hillary and Harry Reid and Chuck Shumer. Why couldn’t Obama vote against it? He told us he wouldn’t triangulate like the other politicians, and that is precisely what he is doing. With his support for the death penalty and his opposition to gun control, what has Obama become? Now I know why people voted for Nader in 2000.

Blogger reactions to Obama

Andrew Sullivan, a gay Obama supporter with strong opinions against the Clintons, said: "If I needed reassurance that this man is the most formidable force in American politics today, his speech tonight confirmed it. It was shrewd - with an artful positioning on Iraq. It was graceful - with respect for McCain's service and Clinton's tenacity. It was brutal - in turning around McCain's Iraq visit meme to domestic economic woes. It was patriotic - in its evocation of Gettysburg and the Second World War. It was outer-directed: not for Obama the recourse to self-satisfied identity politics of the kind used by the Clintons because they often have nothing else. It was moving. I thought I even saw some suggestions of tears as he remembered his grandmother.

Blog Buzz: Barack Obama's Mortgage Rorschach, John McCain's Shakeup, and Flip-Flops

Depending (mostly) on your political bent, today's Washington Post story about Barack Obama's home loan is evidence of media schizophrenia, media incompetence, an Obama real estate scandal, or an Obama non scandal.

MediaDefender attacks Revision3 with DoS attack

MediaDefender attacks Revision3 with DoS attack I read this story today and was almost taken aback. After reading through the entire article it seemed too good (or bad) to be true, but apparently MediaDefender, who has been covered here multiple times, has recently been caught doing some very naughty (and downright illegal) things. Revision3 suffered a massive denial of service attack over the Memorial Day weekend, one that was targeted at their Bittorrent tracking service. While the attack was focused on Bittorrent, it ended up depriving Revision3 of effectively all their services – including email.

Kaspersky To Demo Attack Code For Intel Chips

snydeq writes "Kris Kaspersky will demonstrate how attackers can target flaws in Intel microprocessors to remotely attack a computer using JavaScript or TCP/IP packets, regardless of OS. The demo will be presented at the Hack In The Box Security Conference in Kuala Lumpur in October and will show how processor bugs can be exploited using certain instruction sequences and a knowledge of how Java compilers work, allowing an attacker to take control of the compiler. The demonstrated attack will be made against fully patched computers running a range of OSes, including Windows XP, Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Linux, and BSD. An attack against a Mac is also a possibility."

Speeding to Press: Pete Souza's Obama Book

Veteran photojournalist Pete Souza was working on staff at the Chicago Tribune in 2005 when he began documenting Barack Obama's first term in the U.S. Senate. This spring, as Sen. Obama and his rival Sen. Hillary Clinton were battling to be the Democratic nominee and the outcome was far from clear, book publisher Triumph Books approached Souza with the idea to turn his Obama photos into a book that would be published before the 2008 Democratic Convention in August.
