NCSoft announced today that it will be closing down Tabula Rasa on February 28th. The sci-fi shooter-flavored MMO struggled for quite some time, despite recent attempts to draw in new players by announcements of new features, price reductions, and using Richard Garriott's trip into space as a promotion. We discussed Garriott's departure from NCSoft a couple weeks ago. This is NCSoft's second failed MMO, and apparently layoffs are in the works. They seem to be making an effort to make the game's last few months as fun as they can for their remaining players, though. "Before we end the service, we'll make Tabula Rasa servers free to play starting on January 10, 2009. We can assure you that through the next couple of months we'll be doing some really fun things in Tabula Rasa, and we plan to make staying on a little longer worth your while.

arashtamere writes "Red Hat president and CEO Jim Whitehurst predicts the enterprise open source software business will emerge from the economic crisis stronger than the proprietary market. 'I've had a couple of conversations with CIOs who said, "We're a Microsoft shop and we don't use any open source whatsoever, but we're already getting pressure to reduce our operating costs and we need you to help put together a plan for us to... use open source to reduce our costs." And we've had other customers literally looking at ripping and replacing WebLogic or WebSphere for JBoss ... I think we'll know in about six to nine months but there is no question that open source will come out of this in relatively better shape than our proprietary competitors,' he told Computerworld.

"Much of this started back when Jorge and I started work to improve our upstream bug story. As I talked about in previous entry, bugs are an important mechanic in how Open Source projects communicate and we want to make all of the points of interaction as painless and as smooth as possible. We broke down the workflow and discovered we needed to know about the problem, and with this mind we threw out an upstream survey to some upstream projects that we work closely with, and a general survey that anyone could contribute to. We then evaluated some of the comments from the survey and continued work to develop the upstream report. The feedback helped us to craft a tool (the upstream report) which has helped us focus our efforts in the right areas.

Well, we’ll find out on tonight’s show (ITV1, 8pm – for two whole hours! As anything can happen in the jungle, we don’t know if Nicola will be forced to suck on a large snake, or if Kilroy (we just can’t get used to calling him Robert, can you?) will be buried alive in a pit of flesh-eating monkeys, but we’re sure going to tune in to find out. Have a look at our preview of some of the pre-recorded action too – specifically, Timmy and David’s dramatic arrival in the jungle.

Celery writes "There's an interview with Ray Kurzweil on silicon.com talking up the prospects of gene therapy as a means to reverse human aging, discussing different approaches to developing artificial intelligence, and giving his take on whether super intelligent machines could ever have souls. From the interview: 'The soul is a synonym for consciousness... and if we were to consider where consciousness comes from we would have to consider it an emerging property. Brain science is instructive there as we look inside the brain, and we've now looked at it in exquisite detail, you don't see anything that can be identified as a soul — there's just a lot of neurons and they're complicated but there's no consciousness to be seen. Therefore it's an emerging property of a very complex system that can reflect on itself.

Researchers at an international conference in Montreal this week suggest that one of the evils that's been blamed for contributing toward obesity in children-- video games -- is now being used to promote physical activity. So called "exergaming" video games spur children to use all their limbs rather than only their thumbs. "When we talk about obesity, we often talk about the fast-food industry," said Laurette Dube, organizer of the 2008 McGill Health Challenge Think Tank. "But that's only one side of the equation -- the energy-in side. We also have to look at the energy-out side, and that's why it's very important to look at ways in which we can reduce kids' inactive time and increase their share of time that gets them moving." Linda Carson, a professor of physical education at West Virginia University, says exergaming is a "wholesome" a

Oooh, we're all excited and aflutter! We just L.O.V.E it when a new reality show kicks off. Especially when there's a chance that the stars of the show might get insects poured over their head, or gunge poured down their pants, or snakes slipped into their sleeping bags. Hee hee. We're evil we know, but the latest celebs to trek into the Aussie jungle only have themselves to blame. So, who's made a strong first-episode impression on you? Who is going to be a jungle Jane and who is going to be a jungle monkey? We must say Simon Webbe is looking as hot as we hoped. Such a shame Australia is a nice hot place, where clothes are rarely required. Sigh. So, without further ado, scribble away below and tell us what you thought of tonight's show. If you don't, we might just slip a creepy crawly or two into your smalls.

Hugh Pickens writes "If we humans have such big brains, how can we get conned? Neuroeconomist Paul J. Zak has an interesting post on Psychology Today in which he recounts how he was the victim of a classic con called 'The Pigeon Drop' when he was a teenager and explains how con men take advantage of the Human Oxytocin Mediated Attachment System, called THOMAS, a powerful brain circuit that releases the neurochemical oxytocin when we are trusted and induces a desire to reciprocate the trust we have been shown. 'The key to a con is not that you trust the con man, but that he shows he trusts you. Con men ply their trade by appearing fragile or needing help, by seeming vulnerable,' writes Zak. 'Because of THOMAS, the human brain makes us feel good when we help others — this is the basis for attachment to family and friends and cooperation w

Google announced that on December 31st they will shut down Lively, which was their 3D chat world, and somewhat of a potential competitor to Second Life. Room widgets embedded in other sites are then supposed to show an image but no more interaction, which would add Lively to the list of Google’s canceled products. Google’s post on this decision does not really give a detailed reasoning for this shut-down of a product which was just released this year, except that they’re saying “we want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business.” In particular, this leaves some questions unanswered as a company could theoretically embed ads in this 3D world app.

NEW DELHI, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Dutch conglomerate Philips Electronics needs to "right size" in some markets and is shifting resources to developing countries, its chief executive said on Friday. "We have to right size our workforce and we are proactively doing that," Gerard Kleisterlee told reporters in the Indian capital. "As any company, we also at this moment are very tight... I cannot exclude that." Kleisterlee said Philips had no plans for across the board job cuts but was shifting resources to developing countries from developed countries. Philips last month posted sharply lower third-quarter core profit, missing forecasts, partly hurt by its normally resilient healthcare unit as orders in the United States slowed due to the financial crisis.

We've often wondered why various governments haven't mandated open source e-voting systems. After all, if a free and democratic election is supposed involve true transparency into the voting process, it's hard to see how proprietary software can be allowed. However, the big e-voting companies have been staunch supporters of keeping their solutions proprietary. Except... it may turn out that Premier Election Solutions (which was better known as Diebold until it changed its name to get away from the mocking laughter) is actually using some open source software... and not abiding by the license. Artifex Software is suing Premier for apparently using its GPL'd software and not adhering to the GPL terms. Of course, we should note that Diebold (er.

"Art has the power to heal, to unite, and to express feeling when words sometimes can't be found. It can pay tribute to someone and serve as a constant symbol of the unique spirit within. If we look at great art through history, it can tell us so much about people and places through nonverbal communication. Grief can be so overwhelming, and hits us when we least expect it. Art supercedes linear and logical thinking, and can capture feelings that aren't always explainable through words," said Adrienne Crowther, Owner of Shine On Brightly. "The idea for Shine On Brightly was developed from a lifelong passion for art, and the belief that every life deserves to be honored and celebrated. Deutsche analyst says, "We are upgrading Manpower from Sell to Hold as it is now trading at roughly the same EV as in the trough of the last cycle, despite 70% revenue growth peak to peak (ex FX) and 90% EBIT growth (ex FX). While we now believe this cycle will be worse than 2001, we think this is reflected in the valuation. Our '09 EPS goes from $4.27 to $2.80 and our '10 EPS goes from $3.84 to $2.67. We rate the shares as a Hold as they were at 10x trough earnings intraday on Friday, which is what we view as fair value until we confirm the trough of GDP."
