Let’s face it: smartphone news nowadays seems to center on the iPhone, even if some analysts don’t label it a smartphone. And with the iPhone’s upcoming Exchange support, RIM has to be feeling some heat, despite its dominance in the Enterprise market. The BlackBerry Bold (known during development as the BlackBerry 9000) has been labeled by some as an “iPhone killer,” but it’s not really that so much as a device aimed at keeping BlackBerry on top of the Enterprise game.

A bit more tricklage on RIM's "Apple Killer," the touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder: The official model number is the BlackBerry 9500, and the touchscreen is a bit higher res than the iPhone's (360x480 to 320x480). It'll be running OS 4.7.0 (the Bold runs 4.6). As we inch closer to the September release date expect to hear a lot more, since RIM's ship ain't exactly the tightest one on the seven seas. Smartphone fans are excited about yesterday's announcement of the Blackberry 9000, aka Blackberry Bold, aka Research In Motion's iPhone killer. But Blackberry users are a different breed than iPhone users--the Blackberry's reason for existence is always-connected e-mail, and Blackberry users tend to be all business, afraid of being out of touch for even a moment. (An old friend in Washington D.C.--where Blackberry users are legion--had to make a vow after her third child was born not to check her e-mail after 6 p.m.)

So if you want a taste of that on your BlackBerry Curve or 8800 without upgrading, you can just grab this pretty solid PS3 skin by CS Designs. It's $7, but that's cheaper than the Bold will be. If Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) can do it, then so can we. Just a few weeks after Apple announced its $100 million iFund dedicated to applications for the iPhone and iPod touch platforms, RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) said today that along with media giant Thomson Reuters (NASDAQ: TRIN) it was planning to launch a $150 million venture capital fund that would invest in mobile applications and services for the BlackBerry platform and other mobile platforms. Canadian VC firms JLA Ventures and RBC Venture Partners will co-manage the fund. Unlike Apple, RIM said its fund would be open to all mobile platforms, not just for the BlackBerry. In a sign that it wanted to break away from its business roots, it also said it would consider both consumer and corporate applications.

Unveiled on Monday, the BlackBerry Bold - also known as the BlackBerry 9000 - includes not only tri-band HSDPA but also integrated GPS and 802.11a/b/g wi-fi. It is not the first BlackBerry to use any kind of 3G at all - that honour would go to the 8707v, which came out in 2006 - but such connectivity has been extremely rare in BlackBerry devices since then, with the slower Edge standard being used instead.

More than one pundit has already called the BlackBerry Bold (known during development as the BlackBerry 9000) an "iPhone killer." But that's not the mission of the new super-BlackBerry announced today by Research In Motion. Even as Apple's iPhone has taken the US, if not the rest of the world, by storm over the past 10 months, RIM, which pitches its products primarily to business markets, has enjoyed a fabulously successful year.
