Google abandons antiabortion ad policy after U K legal battle: related news

Google abandons antiabortion-ad policy after U.K. legal battle

So the United Kingdom has this law -- let's call it the Equality Act of 2006 -- that prevents "discrimination on goods and services on the grounds of religion and belief." That means that if you're a company -- say, Google -- you can't deny advertisers on your site just because you don't agree with them on a particular "philosophical belief" -- say, abortion.

Yahoo, Google to delay ad deal amidst U.S. probe

Yahoo Inc. and Google Inc. agreed to delay an Internet advertising partnership while U.S. regulators investigate whether the deal will hurt competition. The companies agreed to a "brief" delay while discussions with the Justice Department continue, Yahoo and Google said yesterday in e-mailed statements. Google chief executive officer Eric Schmidt said in August that the partnership would start in early October. Competitors, consumer advocates and customers questioned whether the partnership would give Google too much control over advertising and information on the Web. The plan raised eyebrows as soon as it was announced in mid-June because Google and Yahoo together handle more than 80 per cent of U.S. Web searches. GOOG (Nasdaq) fell $3.58 (U.

Google Android: The dude? Or big dud?

Today's the day Android strutted its stuff to the world. Is Android the game-changer for the SmartPhone industry, a real contender to the iPhone or just another cell phone OS? It's definitely not just another cell phone OS, as evidenced by all the attention around today's launch. Google has technology that other phones use but Google Android will exploit. Google search, of course is the 800-pound gorilla in search. Add Google maps (including a compass feature Google demonstrated in the T-Mobile [HTC] G1 phone), Google Webkit and the Chrome Web browser (a Chrome Lite comes on Android), Google Talk, YouTube, Google Apps, and so forth. This has allowed Google to layer in a single sign-on for all Google apps, and Android syncs data with your Google account for contacts, calendar, chat and likely other applications in the future.

Borders.com Goes Live with Google Preview

Borders has enabled Google Preview on their site. Google Preview, unveiled in September, is a widget-like tool that allows retailers or anyone handy with Web site code to embed a preview of 20% of any book in Google’s database onto their site. Borders joins Books-A-Million and the U.K. retailer Blackwell Bookshop in using the service. The deal between Google and its retail partners stipulates that retailers will enable Google Preview for any book being sold that is also available in Google’s database, in exchange for an enhanced version of the Preview software. The big advantage for retailers of Google Preview is that it allows consumers to brows books scanned by Google without leaving the retailer’s Web site. Click the “Google Preview” button beneath the jacket art on Borders.

The web is crazy! A new war has just starts. A browser war, a clash of the titans, Google and Microsoft, the battle of the browsers. Finally, Google has unveiled their very own web browser they called it Chrome. It designed to take on Industry leading Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and also one time Google web allies Mozilla ( Goodbye Mozilla.). With chrome Google has just declared war not just on Microsoft but also to the Mozilla folks. Google is known to support open source community and Mozilla is one of those but the games has changed Google got no choice but to drop Mozilla. The competition has just started to get hotter. What exactly Google wants here? World domination? Google got greedy here. First they got Google Apps to take on Microsoft Office then they unveiled Chrome to take on Microsoft internet Explorer.

Yahoo- Google inc. : A threat to Microsoft?

Yahoo, a major prize for Goliaths such as Google and Microsoft that wants to build a web empire with a major audience, sizable revenues, and good brand. By making a deal to Yahoo, Google gets a vastly bigger audience to go with its formidable resources. Google won’t be able to bid for Yahoo because of antitrust concerns. Yahoo has already surrendered some of its advertising space to search leader Google. The deal will allows running Google ads on yahoo search result pages. Google ad partnership with Yahoo could boost revenue and extend its online reach, making it the sole master of online advertising. Does Google deserve Yahoo? Google ad partnership with Yahoo would keep Yahoo out of Microsoft sight. Yahoo so desperate to stay away from Microsoft.

Google Now Allows Sites to Serve Content to Them While Showing a Registration Box to Non-Google Users

There once was a time when Google search tried to be a neutral bystander, watching the web without getting too actively involved. There once was a time when Google instructed webmasters to serve their Googlebot the same thing served to a site’s human users. Now, Google is officially telling webmasters they can serve one thing to people coming from Google web search, and another thing to people coming from elsewhere. Think of it as Google now offering publishers to hand Google a special key to the publisher’s content. Google calls this “first click free” and they say they do this in order “to help users find and access content that may require registration or a subscription”, to “include highly relevant content in Google’s search index” and to “to provide a promotion and discovery opportunity for publishers with restric

Google Abandons Ad Deal With Yahoo

"Pressing ahead risked not only a protracted legal battle but also damage to Google's relationships with valued partners," Google said in a statement. "That would not have been in the long-term interests of Google or its users, so Google has decided to withdraw from the agreement."

U.K. Shoppers Outspending U.S. Consumers Online

LONDON (AdAge.com) -- U.S. online shoppers are being "outshopped" by their U.K. counterparts, with U.K. consumers spending 40% more money and making 24% more purchases online than U.S. shoppers.

Google abandons advertising agreement with Yahoo!

Google has abandoned its planned search advertising cooperation with Yahoo! following resistance from regulators to the deal. The two had voluntarily put the partnership up for regulatory review, but after four months of talks and attempts at amending the deal, they were unable to obtain clearance from the US Department of Justice. Google said continuing with the agreement "risked not only a protracted legal battle but also damage to relationships with valued partners". Yahoo! said it was disappointed that Google was unwilling to defend the agreement in court. Yahoo! plans to continue to invest in search services. The agreement had centred on Google providing Yahoo! and its partner websites with search advertising in the US and Canada.

Microsoft, Google Battle Over Energy Efficiency

1sockchuck writes "Microsoft and Google have opened a new front in their battle for global domination: data center energy efficiency. Just weeks after Google published data on the extreme efficiency of its previously secret data centers, Microsoft says it has achieved similar results with shipping containers (despite Google's patent) packed with up to 2,500 servers. The geeky benchmark for the battle is Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), a green data-center metric advanced by The Green Grid. Microsoft says its containers tested at a PUE of 1.22, while Google reported an average PUE of 1.21 for its data centers, which apparently are also now using containers."

Could You Google Bomb Google Flu?

Google got a lot of attention recently for the launch of Google Flu Trends, which looks at aggregate data on searches related to the flu, to see if it can act as something of an early warning system for where there are flu problems. It's an interesting use of the data, and it will be worth watching what else can be done with this sort of data over time. However, Ed Felten raises an interesting question: can Google Flu Trends be manipulated? The idea is that, right now, it may be accurate, but the very fact that people know Google is tracking this information, could create incentives to game that info -- in the same way people have tried gaming Google in other ways for years, using tricks such as Google bombing. While you might not think there would be that many reasons to manipulate Google Flu Trends, there could be reasons to do so.

Google Android and Chrome: Pay No Attention to the Robot Behind the Curtain

Google has recently announced major initiatives that take them beyond their historical base in Web search and ad delivery. Google's Android mobile operating system and application development platform have generated significant media coverage and industry buzz. Google Chrome, their new Web browser, recently entered a very public beta test phase, and Google's App Engine and Google Gears have created much interest among Web developers. Are these projects that consume huge development resources part of a misguided effort to dethrone Microsoft's desktop hegemony? Is Google losing their focus on search and ad delivery as a result? Or is there more here than meets the eye?

Google's Antitrust Problems Not Just In The US

As Google not-so-eagerly awaits the US Justice Department's word on whether or not it's violating antitrust laws, it appears that the fear of Google-as-a-monopoly is not just a domestic US issue. There are a bunch of headlines about how Russia's antitrust agency has rejected Google's purchase of an ad agency in that country. Technically, the claim is that Google didn't file the proper paperwork, but the agency made it clear that it's worried about Google becoming monopolistic. Of course, as with the Google-Yahoo deal, it's unclear what the "monopoly" is that's being dealt with here or how people are harmed. It seems like this might just be a general "must fear Google" position, than anything based on an actual problem.

Yahoo Ad Campaign Pleads: Dont Give Up On Our Search Tools (We HaventYet)

One of the concerns lawmakers and regulators have about the (currently suspended) Google/Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) search ad pact is that it would make Yahoo’s search business a permanent also-ran to Google (NSDQ: GOOG). So a cynical mind might suppose that a post on Yahoo’s Search Blog about its forthcoming online and offline ad campaign is roughly meant to declare: “Our search platform is still viable despite Google’s dominance!” It could also be a response to other offline campaigns by IAC (NSDQ: IACI) for its search engine Ask.com, which hasn’t necessarily translated into a major usage by consumers. Still, even Google is considering its first major traditional ad campaign, so this sudden branding activity could be just another tactic by Yahoo to generate more users and deal with what’s expected to be a deeper ad slowdown.

Google Drops Yahoo Ad Deal in the Face of DOJ Action

Google announced Wednesday that it was pulling out of an advertising deal struck with Yahoo! in June of 2008 in the face of threats from the DOJ of legal action to block the deal. Google cited concern that a protracted legal battle would be bad for Google and its shareholders, while Yahoo! issued its own statement saying the deal was worth defending in court.

Google Aborts Yahoo Ad Deal

Google had originally announced an advertising deal with Yahoo back in June, which would have been worth $800m a year to the latter. Google is now dropping the deal in the face of anti-trust objections from concerned parties including Microsoft and the Association of National Advertisers. Yahoo is reportedly disappointed that Google didn't want to put up a fight in court, while Google have said that a protracted legal battle would simply distract from their core mission of innovation. Overall, it is another piece of bad news in what has been a turbulent year for Yahoo.

Google Lifts Gambling Ad Restrictions in the U.K.

clickz_ukandeu.gifAs of Friday, Google will allow gambling related advertising to appear against search results aimed at users within the U.K. The decision effectively reverses the search giant's blanket ban on all forms of gambling-related advertising, including play-for-fun sites, which came into effect in 2007.

Google's chief of environmental policy explains strategy

Dan Reicher, director of climate and energy initiatives at Google.org, the for-profit philanthropic arm of the Internet search giant, is spreading the anti-coal gospel in government and industry circles. Since January, it has invested $45 million in solar, wind and geothermal ventures as part of a renewable-energy initiative begun last year. Reicher, a former U.S. assistant secretary of energy, green venture investor and environmental lawyer, was interviewed just as Google turned 10 years old. Days earlier, Google and General Electric forged a pact to push for an upgraded U.S. electricity grid and Google presented a $4.4 trillion plan to wean the United States off coal and oil by 2030.
