For a couple of hours yesterday, Comcast’s Internet Portal (comcast.net) had its DNS records hijacked and a defaced webComcastâs DNS records hijacked page was loading from third-party domains. Further investigation into this incident reveals a connection between the group responsible for Comcast’s DNS hijacking and previous incidents such as the defacements of Justin Timberlake, Hilary Duff and Tila Tequila’s MySpace profiles. Comcast.net wasn’t hacked, its DNS records got hijacked, so whenever someone visited comcast.net, the defaced page was loading from different servers. Let’s assess the incident by taking a look at the way Comcast’s DNS records changed yesterday, find out who’s behind it, and how a couple of hours later Comcast restored access to its domain.

cynagh0st writes "A Pew Internet & American Life Project report indicates that of an overwhelming majority of Chinese people that believed the Internet should be 'managed or controlled,' 85% want the government to do this managing. This is resulting from surveys on Internet use over the last seven years in China. 'The survey findings discussed here, drawn from a broad-based sample of urban Chinese Internet users and non-users alike, indicate a degree of comfort and even approval of the notion that the government authorities should control and manage the content available on the Internet.' The report goes further into describing the divide in perspective between China and Western Nations on the matter and discusses the PRC's justifications for Internet control.

According to the latest E SOURCE market research study, 51% of Internet users in the U.S. and Canada now pay at least one monthly bill online. That represents a substantial increase over the results of the company's 2004 research. At that time, only 33% of Internet users were making online payments. In 2005, the Pew Internet & American Life Project reported a relatively small increase -- around 38% of Internet users were paying a monthly bill online. According to Andrew Heath, director of Customer Satisfaction Services at E SOURCE and one of the new study's authors, "our current finding is important because it indicates a major shift in customer behavior over the past four years." He added that the new research also found that "16% of the people who have used a utility's interactive voice reponse (IVR) system have used it to make a monthl

tkrabec alerts us to a CERT advisory announcing a massive, multi-vendor DNS patch released today. Early this year, researcher Dan Kaminsky discovered a basic flaw in the DNS that could allow attackers easily to compromise any name server; it also affects clients. Kaminsky has been working in secret with a large group of vendors on a coordinated patch. Eighty-one vendors are listed in the CERT advisory (DOC). Here is the executive overview (PDF) to the CERT advisory — text reproduced at the link above. There's a podcast interview with Dan Kaminsky too. His site has a DNS checker tool on the top page. "The issue is extremely serious, and all name servers should be patched as soon as possible. Updates are also being released for a variety of other platforms since this is a problem with the DNS protocol itself, not a specific implementation

Corrupt links to a Sydney Morning Herald article which begins "The French state and internet service providers have struck a deal to block sites carrying child pornography or content linked to terrorism or racial hatred, Interior Minister Michel Alliot-Marie announced on Tuesday." The article is thin on details, but what it does say is bad enough: "Under the French plan, internet users, via a platform, will be able to signal inappropriate sites and the state, receiving the complaints in real time, will then decide whether the sites are to go on a so-called black list to be passed on to internet service providers to enforce site blocks." It sounds like the perfect way to organize an especially malicious DDoS attack. The French government has never been shy about wanting to "protect" French people by censoring Internet content, though.
