Samsung is close to releasing a cellphone with a camera that's both high-resolution and with real optical zoom, according to a report by Telecoms Korea. The combined package would include an eight-megapixel sensor like those in shipping Samsung camera phones but would also have a 3X zoom system to deliver longer-ranged and more accurately focused shots than most cellphones, which normally rely on digital zoom that simply scales pixels upwards.

I guess the complicated combination of accelerometers and proximity sensors isn't trivial technology, but this one really should have been done by now: automatic zoom based on camera movement. In a new patent application, Sony Ericsson has detailed technology that judges your intention to zoom by measuring the camera's distance from your body, zooming in as it moves further away. The patent is just for cameraphones at the moment, but there's no reason that it couldn't (or shouldn't) crop up in the next generation of point and shoots as well. [UnwiredView via Engadget]

The mid-range zoom I started with when I bought my Nikon D300 was no speed demon, and I was hankering for an f/2.8 lens in the (effective) 70-200mm range. What first attracted me to the Tokina AT-X 535 PRO DX was the fast, constant maximum aperture, providing a bright view every step of the way. What’s more, the barrel on this tele-zoom does not rotate when zoomed: all movement is entirely internal, including focusing, so the lens maintains a nice balance when hefted in your hand. Equally important, that means I can use a circular polarizer, then set it and forget it while zooming. Add to that the use of Super Low-Dispersion glass to minimize or eliminate chromatic aberration, and you have a really nice combination.

The new EZDigiMagic model DM220-P08 allows users to burn files directly from memory cards to CD or DVD discs. The Panasonic Lumix LX3 has a sensor resolution of 10.1 effective megapixels from a newly developed 1/1.63 inches RGB CCD image sensor, which is said to offer 40 percent higher sensitivity compared to the company's other ten megapixel digital cameras. Panasonic has coupled this to an image-stabilized, Leica DC Vario-Summicron branded 2.5x optical zoom lens with an impressive 24mm wide-angle setting. There's no built-in viewfinder, but an optional external DMW-VF1 optical viewfinder, crafted out of aluminum, can be attached to the LX3's flash hot shoe. Of course, there's also an LCD display -- a large 3-inch type with a generous 460,000 dot resolution. The Panasonic LX3's lens has a maximum aperture that varies from a bright f/2.0 to f/2.8 across the zoom range.
