SHANGHAI, Nov 12 (Reuters) - China's central bank is expected to auction up to 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) of three-month bills in its regular open market operations on Thursday at a yield of about 2.60 percent, traders said on Wednesday. Most said that the auction result would drop about 23 basis points from the 2.8275 percent yield at the last auction for such bills sold two weeks ago, which remains well above the secondary market yield on bills with the same tenor, and from 3.0310 percent in the previous week. But a few traders expect the auction result would come in even lower, within a range of between 2.40 and 2.50 percent after steep falls seen in short-term bill yields in recent weeks. The indicative three-month bill yield in the secondary market fell to a 21-month low of 2.

A new study uncovers a previously unrecognized, species-specific impact of circadian rhythms on the production of mobilized stem cells. The research, published by Cell Press in the October 9th issue of the journal Cell Stem Cell, suggests that when it comes to collecting human stem cells for clinical transplantation, picking the right time of day to harvest cells may result in a greater yield.

A team that includes a Penn State biologist has identified a gene in rice that controls the size and weight of rice grains. The gene may prove to be useful for breeding high-yield rice and, thus, may benefit the vast number of people who rely on this staple food for survival. The discovery will be published on Sep. 28, 2008, in an early online edition of the journal Nature Genetics, and in the November print issue of the journal. Full Story
