With the growing use of XML data, the need for the coexistence of relational data and XML data is also growing. The classic approach of storing XML data as physical disk files is unsuitable and tedious in many situations. No wonder modern database engines are geared to store XML documents right along with the rest of the relational data. To that end, the XML data type introduced in SQL Server 2005 is a great addition to the database engine. Prior to SQL Server 2005, developers often used VARCHAR or TEXT column types to store XML documents and fragments. Although this approach served well as far as data storage is concerned, it proved to be poor in terms of querying and manipulating the XML data. This article will give you a jump start in using the XML data type of SQL server and will teach you how XML data can be manipulated with the help

XML is increasingly being used as the language of data exchange. An XML document based on a DTD or a XML Schema contains data that conforms to a standard structure. A number of technologies, such as ebXML (Electronic Business XML), UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration), and RDF (Resource Description Framework) are based on XML. New business concepts, such as B2C and B2B, e-services, commerce resource platform, peer-to-peer commerce and collaborative commerce, have emerged as a result of XML. In this article, XML data management in Adaptive Server Enterprise 12.5 is highlighted.

Syncro Soft has updated Oxygen XML Editor (and Oxygen XML Author) to version 9.3. The update's main feature is archive-editing support. Users can extract, validate, edit and process the XML data in OpenDocument files and other ZIP-based archives. The software also supports transformations using XSLT 1.0, XSLT 2.0 and XQuery on files inside ZIP-based archives and users can compare and merge archived files. It works with OOXML, ODF, JAR and other zip-based archives. Oxygen XML Editor and XML Author are cross-platform, working on Windows, Linux/Unix and Eclipse, in addition to the Mac platform. Oxygen XML Editor costs $300 for a professional license while XML Author costs $180. There are also enterprise and education licenses and a 30-day trial is available.

Traditionally DOM or SAX-based enterprise applications have to repeat CPU-intensive XML parsing when accessing the same documents multiple times. VTD-XML 2.0 introduces a simple general-purpose XML index called VTD+XML (http://vtd-xml.sourceforge.net/persistence.html) that eliminates the need for repetitive parsing of those applications.

The XML Processing Model Working Group has published a Working Draft of XProc: An XML Pipeline Language. This specification describes the syntax and semantics of XProc: An XML Pipeline Language, a language for describing operations to be performed on XML documents. Pipelines are made up of simple steps which perform atomic operations on XML documents and constructs similar to conditionals, iteration, and exception handlers, which control which steps are executed. The status section of the document lists the most important changes since the previous draft. Learn more about the Extensible Markup Language (XML) Activity.

While EDI transactions account for most worldwide commercial activity, XML-based alternatives are beginning to gain traction. According to Forrester Research, stateful XML, stateless XML, and even flat file exchanges are all projected to grow at a faster rate than EDI over the next few years. The firm predicts stateful XML transactions will be required for a growing number of B2B process-oriented transactions and are projected to exceed the growth of EDI transactions over the next five years.

The GNU diff and patch utilities let you compare files to generate a patch that describes the changes between files. You can then apply the patch file on that machine or another. You might think to use diff and patch on XML files, since they are just text files -- and depending on your application, diff and patch might serve your needs well. However, as things such as the sequence in which attributes are ordered in an element tag are not important in an XML file, using specific tools that are aware of the XML standard can make seeing differences and sending XML-aware "patch" files much more attractive.

XML is a data format concerned primarily with compatibility and flexibility. But as useful as XML is, it's limited without the abilities to find specific portions of a document quickly and to filter and selectively locate data within a document. XPath provides the ability to easily reference specific text, elements, and attributes within a document—and with a fairly low learning curve. Additionally, XPath is key to many other XML vocabularies and technologies, such as XSL and XQuery. This tutorial will teach you the fundamentals of XPath, including all of its various selectors and semantics, in an example-driven and hands-on manner.
