PS3 2.4 update to bring trophies, in-game XMB, more on July 2nd

Sony has updated their Playstation blog with a boatload of info on the next system update for the Playstation 3, version 2.4. The update will bring several new features we've already mentioned such as trophies and the ability to play music in-game, but that's not all: the new update will also support XMB access inside games. Like the PSP, the 2.4 update will also include Google support via XMB. Sony has posted a video walkthrough highlighting the new XMB, as well as a 2nd video dedicated to the trophy system.

Sony Confirms July 2 Debut For In-Game PS3 XMB, Trophies [06.30.08] Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced that its PlayStation 3 2.40 system software update, due July 2nd, will include XrossMediaBar (XMB) access in-game and support for its Trophies ranking and rewards system. Super Stardust HD will be the first game to leverage the Trophies system.

Developers promise imminent PS3 trophy patches

Sony's Eric Lempel Talks PS3 Version 2.4

Earlier today, Sony unveiled the release date and other information regarding PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.4, which will implement in-game XMB access and the trophy system, the PS3's answer to Xbox 360's achievements. Since our news article was published a few hours ago, we were able to speak with PlayStation Network's Director of Operations, Eric Lempel, in a brief phone interview to get a little more information about what we can expect in this Wednesday's update.

PS3 2.41 firmware released

Accordin to Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, Sony "had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.

Sony Computer Entertainment were forced to pull their long-awaited 2.40 firmware update for the PS3 last week after it emerged the trophy/in-game XMB adding patch was causing system crashes.

PS3 Update 2.4 Coming to North America July 2nd

We reported nearly two weeks ago that Sony Computer Entertainment America revealed that a PS3 firmware update would implement long-awaited features, such as in-game XMB access and an awards system. Yesterday, SCEA uploaded the first of two informational videos on PlayStation.Blog regarding the changes. Earlier today, it unveiled the second video and the release date for firmware version 2.4. The update releases this Wednesday, July 2.
