TripPlanner - A Complete Program Using WPF and XAML

Several weeks ago, I posted part 5 of my series on WPF and XAML containing some actual VB.NET code. WPF and XAML are so different from Windows Forms that I had to use the previous four parts to lay lay the foundation for VB coding. In part 6, we really get serious. This article is almost as long as the maximum I'm allowed to post because there is so much code in it. In addition to WPF and XAML, there are other reasons you might want to check out this example program:

Creating a Silverlight 2 Application by Combining Expression Blend and Visual Studio 2008

Silverlight has been in the news since it was announced last year. In fact, Silverlight began as what was known as WPF/E (Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere). When Microsoft introduced WPF for the desktop and deployment through Clickonce, it felt that it had to enter the RIA (Rich Internet Applications) market that was dominated by Flash. Because Silverlight is built on WPF and uses XAML as the declarative language for building the pages, however, there are certain differences between using WPF and Silverlight.

WPF layout, NaN, and VB code

WPF is very different from Windows Forms, in part because things are drawn on the output in a way that can make your code fail in unexpected ways. This short article describes how this can happen when WPF has failed to calculate the Width and Height properties during the layout and what to do about it.

Data Binding using WPF and XAML

Part 4 of our series on WPF and XAML tells you how to code "markup extensions" in XAML so WPF - the new forms technology in Framework 3.0 - will automatically use a property in one control to update another one. This article uses the example of changing the size of a text font as a slider is adjusted.

2D Graphics using WPF

For many years, GDI+ has been the graphic foundation of Microsoft technology. Today, there's a new technology, WPF - Windows Presentation Foundation. WPF is usually thought of as a replacement for Windows Forms, but there's actually a powerful graphics part of it that also replaces GDI+. This article explains it.

Getting Up and Running with the Composite UI Application Block for WPF

By design, large software applications should be developed from loosely coupled objects. This allows the code to be re-used in other projects because, for example, a business object class does not depend on the user interface components to work.
