PRINCETON, NJ -- Over half of Americans say they are worse off financially now than they were a year ago, tied for the most negative reading in Gallup's 32-year history of asking this question. Still, close to 6 in 10 say they hope to be better off at this time next year. And despite the recent financial crisis, these results are no worse than those of four months ago, at the beginning of the summer.

President-elect Obama in an interview with '60 Minutes' was asked directly if the current economic situation is similar to the situation in 1932. His first response showed judgment—as he put it, in 1932 the unemployment rate was 25% and the economy was in much worse shape than today. However, he also quickly added that our current situation is the worse situation we have faced since 1932. His position is not uncommon, but I remain confused by this "argument" whether it is uttered by the President-Elect or by a university colleague. The position relies on an assessment of the counter-factual—that in fact had we not agreed to the $700b plus bailout, the economy would have deteriorated to a 1932 type crisis. We are told simultaneously that Hank Paulson has made mistakes in implementation and is still trying to figure it out, and yet that t

The IBEX launch, which we previewed here at Gizmodo last Monday, went off without a hitch today. The ottoman-sized probe was strapped to a rocket that was strapped to the belly of an airplane, which carried it to 40,000 feet. From there, the rocket fired up and took IBEX to an orbit about 200,000 miles up. Fun! But it gets worse. Much worse. I hope everyone has their lead-lined fallout suits at the ready, because things could get a bit freaky in a few decades.

Job losses in the U.S., which have accelerated in the last two months, have pushed the unemployment rate to a 14-year high, and that could prolong and add to the economy's problems, bloggers say. Additionally, government interventions may not be enough to prevent further contraction from occurring in the economy.

This story in the Guardian discusses scholarly publishing, and concerns among scientists that the growth in online journals means so many papers are being released that the pressure to get into the top-tier journals is higher than ever. The article cites anthropologist Alex Bentley as saying, "We're just producing so much wordage that nobody has time to read anything. It makes academic publishing, and even science itself, a bit like trying to get hits on blogs or try to make yourself the Britney of science."

An anonymous reader writes "The Australian Government's plan to Censor the Internet is producing problems for ISPs, with filters causing speeds to drop by up to 86% and falsely blocking 10% of safe sites. The Government Minister in charge of the censorship plan, Conservative Stephen Conroy, has been accused of bullying ISP employees critical of his plan: 'If people equate freedom of speech with watching child pornography, then the Rudd Labor Government is going to disagree.'" Read on for more, including an interesting approach to demonstrating the inevitable collision of automated censorship with common sense.

Several times a month I fix a slow or unstable PC just by removing Symantec's Norton security products. Typically they break the PC's internet connection or slow it to a crawl, and getting rid of them is a miracle cure. That makes me look good, but I'd prefer things to just work. There's no lack of real problems to solve.

China contaminated milk melamineThe toxic chemical melamine that has already contaminated Chinese milk and eggs may also have been widely used in animal feed, according to new reports from the Chinese state media. Chinese consumers were horrified when it was revealed in September that four babies had died and more than 50,000 were sickened due to tainted infant formula, and the outrage grew in October when eggs from four large companies were also found to be tainted. Since then, the widening scandal has caused companies across Asia to recall products made with Chinese milk or eggs, and the new reports suggest that there may be broader recalls to come.
