45% of techies do not believe IT industry has adapted to flexible working

Research conducted by online recruitment specialist www.theitjobboard.co.uk reveals that although 61.1 percent of IT professionals work flexible hours, almost half (45.2 percent) of these do not believe the IT industry has adapted itself to a flexible working culture. Flexible working was classified as working from home, working less hours/part time, flexi-time and working a four and half day week.

Open-Source ATI Driver Achieves Major R500 3D Success

"While the RadeonHD developers have been busy working on Radeon HD 3200 / 780 Series support and other features for this open-source ATI R500/600+ driver, the DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) support has been lagging behind. Earlier this month Matthias Hopf was successful in getting DRM working on an RS690 GPU and he has published RadeonHD DRM code into his personal development tree, but no code has yet to reach master. Meanwhile, as the xf86-video-ati driver is using AtomBIOS, they are able to spend more time working on the 3D features and other areas and less time 'banging on registers' or even waiting on register documentation to arrive. David Airlie has been working on the R500 3D support along with Alex Deucher and Corbin Simpson. The trio has been making some great headway towards open-source 3D goodness for Radeon X1000 and HD 2000/3

Cablecos, Telcos Working To Strengthen the Duopoly

The LA Times is running a piece on cooperation among cable companies and telcos. No, not cablecos cooperating with telcos; rather, both industries working on industry-wide initiatives aimed at getting a leg up on the other. AT&T, Verizon, and Qwest have been working on a site, Moveroo.com, aimed at easing the pain of people moving within the US — by making it easier for them to hook up with the incumbent telco at their destination, for instance. Odd that there is no mention of which cable services might be available where they are heading. The cablecos are cooperating on a more ambitious initiative to standardize targeted advertising nationwide, using data gathered from the set-top boxes used by Time Warner, Cox, Comcast, Cablevision, Charter, and Bright House Networks.

Four devs working on PS3 Bioshock

The PlayStation 3 version of BioShock is shaping up to be quite a beast: a grand total of four developers are working on the port. Aside from 2K Boston and 2K Australia (the two teams who originally produced and released the game on the Xbox 360 and PC last summer) 2K Marin and an external studio, Digital Extremes have also signed on. It's worth nothing the need for four studios (that's got to set a record, maybe two with it being a port) could be due to the fact each of them are believed to be working on other projects at the moment.

Working at Microsoft vs. working at Google

Dare Obasanjo, program manager for Microsoft's Windows Live Platform group, writes: "Recently I've been bumping into more and more people who've either left Google to come to Microsoft or got offers from both companies and picked Microsoft over Google. I believe this is part of a larger trend especially since I've seen lots of people who left the company for "greener pastures" return in the past year (at least 8 people I know personally have rejoined) ."

Cutting-Edge AI Projects?

Xeth writes "I'm a consultant with DARPA, and I'm working on an initiative to push the boundaries of neuromorphic computing (i.e. artificial intelligence). The project is designed to advance ideas all fronts, including measuring and understanding biological brains, creating AI systems, and investigating the fundamental nature of intelligence. I'm conducting a wide search of these fields, but I wanted to know if any in this community know of neat projects along those lines that I might overlook. Maybe you're working on a project like that and want to talk it up? No promises (seriously), but interesting work will be brought to the attention of the project manager I'm working with. If you want to start up a dialog, send me an email, and we'll see where it goes.

Microsoft Study Says Repetitive Strain Injury Costs $600m

4roddas writes "Work-related RSI cases are at an all-time high and the cost to businesses is spiraling, new Microsoft research reveals. Repetitive strain injury cases have soared by over 30 percent in the last year, costing businesses over US$600 million in lost working hours — and causing pain and debilitating discomfort to over-worked staff. Microsoft claims the rapidly emerging trend of 'mobile working' — with office-based employees now working on the move for an average of an hour more per day than they did two years ago using laptops and mobile devices — is behind this alarming climb in work-related injury. The company arrived at its conclusions in a poll among over 1,000 office workers, HR managers and office managers. This showed that 68 percent of office workers suffered from aches and pains, with the most common symptoms in

Working from home - or when out and about with the help of a featherweight laptop - may seem to capture the spirit of the age but attitudes to work are far more Victorian in the IT department, a survey of techies has found.
