Pickens writes "Human-rights activists have discovered a huge surveillance system in China that monitors and archives Internet text conversations sent by customers of Tom-Skype, a joint venture between a Chinese wireless operator and eBay. Researchers say the system monitors a list of politically charged words that includes words related to the religious group Falun Gong, Taiwan independence, the Chinese Communist Party and also words like democracy, earthquake and milk powder. The encrypted list of words inside the Tom-Skype software blocks the transmission of these words and records personal information about the customers who send the messages. Researchers say their discovery contradicts a public statement made by Skype executives in 2006 that 'full end-to-end security is preserved and there is no compromise of people's privacy.

Microsoft has been granted a patent for software that censors "undesirable" words in real-time mode or a batch mode. The auto-censoring filter compares words in live recordings to phonemes or words included in undesired speech data. If there is a match, the words are made "unintelligible or inaudible."

Microsoft was granted U.S. patent No. 7437290 for, essentially, a technology that lets the company bleep out words in an audio stream that match a list of predefined bad words. Ars Technica, which reported on the patent both when Microsoft applied for it in 2004 as well as now that it has been granted, notes that the technology could be used for more than just censoring profanity, suggesting that perhaps China or another government would want it employed for other phrases, such as Tibet or free speech. Paragon Software Group, a software developer and content provider for mobile devices and desktop PCs, has launched The Talking English Dictionary for the iPhone and iPod touch. The dictionary database contains more than 240,000 words, phrases, and definitions in British English. No Internet connection is required--users can download once and use it without incurring any additional expenses. The "History" feature shows the last 15 translated words, and the "Cross-Lookup" feature checks language comprehension. A native British sound module of 20,000 words is available as well. The Talking English Dictionary allows browsing through the SlovoEd engine, which compresses the dictionary content to a minimum of memory space while allowing the user to perform multiple learning, word reference, and translation functions.

In other words, it used to be that you could use punctuation between words instead of quote characters outside the phrase to trigger phrase search results. I often used dashes, as in foo-bar. Ianf writes, “Apparently it is no more, only I only realized it just now.” (Not sure how new this is; also note you will still often get very similar results.)

It’s often said that some dramatic situations are so intense that words inevitably escalate into dance, song or both. DV8’s ambiguously titled To Be Straight with You makes an opposite journey. The choreographer Lloyd Newson’s company, which is renowned for dance and “physical theatre”, turns not merely to words in order to express its outrage at homophobia but to no fewer than 85 verbatim interviews with gay, straight and not-so-sure people in streets, living rooms, everywhere.

"Art has the power to heal, to unite, and to express feeling when words sometimes can't be found. It can pay tribute to someone and serve as a constant symbol of the unique spirit within. If we look at great art through history, it can tell us so much about people and places through nonverbal communication. Grief can be so overwhelming, and hits us when we least expect it. Art supercedes linear and logical thinking, and can capture feelings that aren't always explainable through words," said Adrienne Crowther, Owner of Shine On Brightly. "The idea for Shine On Brightly was developed from a lifelong passion for art, and the belief that every life deserves to be honored and celebrated. We're located in Asheville, North Carolina, but our products are available worldwide.
