The original musical score is composed by the highly regarded, Bay Area based bassist/composer Marcus Shelby, who also concludes the evening in a live performance with his quartet.

It's 2008. Why are we still calling the devices we carry in our pockets "phones." The difference between cordless phones and cell phones is just one word, though the difference in functionality is vast. Even more clumsily, we call phones with email and web browsing "smartphones," despite most modern geeks using less than 10% of their battery to make calls. With so many disparate core features—emailing and browsing, plus texting, video calling, video recording, pic snapping, music listening, video watching, game playing and day organizing—shouldn't we be ditching the word "phone"? The term is so...1876. We need a new name, and I humbly suggest "com." Follow me on this one:

The word "genius" is the nuclear weapon in the critic's armoury. A lot of people think it should never be used. I used it a while ago and someone wrote to the Guardian complaining. I think they thought I was using it satirically - so rarely is this term employed and so dangerous is its aura.

Great batsmen do not play great innings all the time, while even the most ordinary batsman is capable of one great innings that becomes a part of the folklore of the game. Sport has debased the word "great" through overuse; it is convenient, crisp, and to the great delight of headline writers, has only five letters. As a bonus, it rhymes with other sporting staples such as "fate", "late", "rate", "wait" and so on.

Ubuntu is the Zulu word for a traditional African philosophy that encourages people to live and work together harmoniously. Desmond Tutu defines ubuntu as "the very essence of being human," what you say when you want to "give high praise to someone." After a week spent wrestling with the Ubuntu operating system—the most popular, most consumer-friendly version of the Linux OS—I've discovered a few different usages for the word. It works quite well as an epithet—something to be yelled loudly and often as you struggle to adjust to a computer that has neither the elegance of a Mac nor the broad utility of a PC. But ubuntu can also be uttered as a sigh of anticipation: Though this Linux-based OS is far from perfect, it does make it seem increasingly possible to do all your work on a computer whose software costs you nothing at all.
