The filmmaker of "Filth and Wisdom" has a lot to say. She's got big ideas and some clever ones too, and she's letting it fly. She's repulsed and fascinated by hypocrisy in the world, and wants people to just get over themselves, to abandon fear, pride, and learn to fly their freak flag high. She found this cool new band and its awesome-looking Ukrainian lead singer, and made a film all about him and his friends making it in the big city.

"On the phenomenal success of Linux, Linus is justly proud. Back in 1991 he launched Linux with the comment "I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won"t be big and professional like GNU) for 386 (486) AT clones." How little did he realise just what he had set in motion.

This hot spot is a visual treat, say the guys with a mischievous wink. Ask them why and out comes the frank reply: “We get to see lot of cute girls!”But then they are quick to add, “Please don’t think we are all the time ogling. We also discuss lessons and assignments.”When somebody comes in the morning with tension writ large on his face, we express full camaraderie.

File this under “Only in Cambridge.” Before my interview last week with the founders of Crimson Hexagon, a startup using statistical methods to comb the blogosphere for the latest opinion on brand-name products, I had assumed that the company’s name came from its affiliation with Harvard, where its technical founder, Gary King, is a professor of government. Nope—turns out it’s an allusion to a single line in a short story in Spanish by the late avant-garde Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges.

LONDON: The British government's plan to inject capital into its ailing banks has been embraced by a European continent with a long tradition of encouraging a state role in the economy. And it is rapidly being seen here as an improvement - philosophical as well as functional - over America's $700 billion fund to purchase defunct mortgage assets from troubled financial institutions.

The accepted wisdom appears to be that the chairman of the FCC, Kevin Martin, will step down following the election of Barack Obama, and will likely be replaced by a Democrat nominated by the incoming president. This will shift the balance at the FCC from a 3-2 Republican majority to a 3-2 Democratic majority for the first time in eight years. As the terms of the other commissioners expire over the next few years there may be further changes in the composition of the commission.

The conventional wisdom about childhood, made memorable in L.P. Hartley's phrase, is that "the past is a foreign country." But it's a country so much touristed in literary retrospect that we begin to think we really know what it was like. If we're old enough to read, we have a stake in the matter; we're interested. This might be less true for the other, antipodean place, at the edge of Shakespeare's "undiscover'd country from whose bourn no traveler returns." We may all hope to get to old age, but slowly, with leisured circumspection, and few of us are in a great hurry to study the brochures. The writer who takes the declining years as his subject matter is sailing into the wind.
