Those at Google Labs have been busy again and today introduced Firefox users to Geode, an add-on which can allow websites you visit to detect your location and then provide you with information more tailored to your needs. Example cited are a website you might visit both at home and at work being able to tell the difference between the two and serve up content suitable to each location, or a news site that can provide you with stories which are truly local. Geode uses a technology from Skyhook called Loki, which maps WiFi signals (so you'll need a WiFi enabled computer) in your area to determine your location (with a claimed accuracy of 10 to 20 meters). Geolocation Services are planned for the upcoming release of Firefox 3.1, so the release of Geode should help users get accustomed to the possibilites involved.
