Cyan developers planning iMyst for iPhone

Three UruLive developers are in the process of porting the original Myst game to the iPhone as part of a side project. While details are sparse, a Cyan employee with the moniker of Chogon reveals that the so-called iMyst is an outside project, independent of Cyan. Chogon notes that while some may roll their eyes, the project is responsible for keeping several developers employed, while also allowing Cyan to expand its reach to other platforms.

Microsoft Details Xbox 360 Price Cut, Netflix Streaming Deal

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) announced over the weekend that it has slashed $50 off the price of its basic 20GB Xbox 360 game console, to $299, while also unveiling plans to release a new 60GB model in August that will retail for $349. Vendors Rally While Windows Sleeps

Anti-Globalism sends along a PCWorld article outlining two technologies from Intel and Dell that do an end run around Windows. "Dell, Intel and their partners announced last week new technologies that represent major leaps forward for mobility. The companies seem to have discovered the secret to making such bold leaps: Cut Microsoft out of the deal. One technology involves enabling users to gain instant access to a laptop's e-mail, browser and other basic functionality — without booting Windows at all. The second technology enables an Internet-based message to wake a Windows PC from sleep mode. These new technologies are perfect metaphors for what's happening in the industry... Windows is asleep while Microsoft's own partners give users what they really want.

RE5: No shooting while running

TalkPlayStation.com writes:"From what we've seen in the trailers and videos from E3, you can't shoot while running in Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 has this same problem and quite a lot of people complained about it. The stop and shoot mechanic is back.

iPod nanos turning into roman candles while charging

If you have ever read about exploding batteries in laptops or other electronic devices but thought that the same could never happen to you, you may want to think again. Consumerist reader Dale probably didn't think that the simple act of charging his first-generation iPod nano could start a fire on his desk, but the device had other plans. While charging, Dale's iPod exploded and began smoking and shooting sparks; the sparks kept flying even after the device was disconnected.

Facebook Connect Aims to Aggregate Social Media While Protecting User Privacy

In May, Google announced a new initiative called Friend Connect that enables site owners to add social media to their websites, and allows internet users to connect their social accounts more seamlessly. But while Facebook was initally part of the effort, later they banned Google's Friend Connect from their site, citing issues with privacy and the redistribution of user data.

34 Low-Carb Diet & Health Blogs For You While I'm On Vacation In Florida

That little fella in the picture above was in the airport last week in New York and seeing him all sprawled out cute like that in an uncomfortable position made me think about how I feel right about now with my breakneck schedule. WHEW! It's been busy lately and I'm looking forward to heading down to Florida on Tuesday to be with my brother Kevin (THANK YOU for all the prayers for his health!) and the rest of my family for a week. And I'm not gonna blog a bit while I'm gone--gee, imagine that, a REAL vacation! :D

Selling the suckers on Google-Yahoo

While the food fight between Yahoo and Carl Icahn escalates--and while I'm at it, don't forget Microsoft--both the House and Senate Judiciary committees are getting ready to hold hearings on the proposed Yahoo-Google tie-up. In advance of this primo photo op for the hired help, I had a chance to review the prepared testimony of David Drummond, Google's chief legal officer. Give the guy credit for putting together a crisp presentation. Among the highlights:

Magna Predicts Healthy, But Slowing Gains For Online Video, Social Media; Search Continues To Rule

While fellow Magna ad spend forecaster Bob Coen has taken a slightly more pessimistic view of online ad revenue growth for this year, the IPG media firm has separately issued another report with a fairly healthy outlook for digital media through 2009. While Brian Weiser, Magna’s director of Industry Analysis, mainly tries to remind the industry that “traditional media never died” and is still thriving, his Emerging Media Forecast (PDF) notes that growth is slowing for social media, gaming and online video in 2009. Some highlights from the report include:

Sony to bring the social to PlayStation 3 with firmware 2.40

While the PlayStation 3 has gone through an impressive metamorphosis since release, the social aspects of the system still leave much to be desired: there is no good way to communicate to people on your friends list across different games, and inviting people to join you while playing online can be a pain. There is also nothing that comes close to the 360's innovative "achievements" system to get people to try new ways of playing, or simply enjoy the bragging rights of having the highest gamerscore. That changes on July 2, however, when Sony launches the firmware 2.40 update that adds in-game XMB support and trophies to the system. The importance of these two updates is hard to underestimate.

Olympic Photographer Blogs

While watching the Olympics, seated in front of the television with my laptop, I ended up with a pretty extensive set of bookmarked links to blogs from lots of great photographers covering the games. The closing ceremonies are a day away now, but I figure the blogs should be up for a while, and will still make for informative and entertaining reading. So here they are, all in one place. Click on the photographer's names, and please let me know if I've missed any (just blogs, not "Picture of the Day" sites or those that require registration).

Fedora considering a new privacy policy

For a while now, we've been butting up against the Red Hat Privacy Policy (which we've been using to cover Fedora). To try to address some of these concerns, I sat down and made a new privacy policy for Fedora to use that is independent of Red Hat's Privacy Policy. I made a draft, then sent it over to Red Hat Legal for review. They made some minor changes and sent it back to me. Here it is for you folks to look over: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/TomCallaway/PrivacyPolicyD... Keep in mind that while this is more open than the Red Hat Privacy Policy, I think it is more in keeping with the spirit of Fedora. (Also, it is directly derived from Red Hat's privacy policy, so its not as if I completely rewrote it from scratch). Barring any major failures, I plan to present this for approval at next week's board meeting.
