Hubble looks through the 'north pole' of the Milky Way

The geometry of the Milky Way leads to an anistropy in the clarity of images we are capable of capturing. If one looks in certain directions, the view will be slightly obscured by what is known as the galactic plane. The Milky Way, and other similar galaxies, are relatively flat and the bulk of their non-dark matter—gases, stars, and dust—lie in a geometric plane. Even if one uses a space-based telescope, images taken looking at low galactic latitudes will be obscured by our galaxy's dust. New images from the Hubble, recently released, looked as far away from the galactic plane as possible, pointing all the way to the galactic north pole; they show a clear image of many galaxies that exist in the Coma cluster.

Best Way To Get Back a Stolen Computer?

davidphogan74 writes "I have some stolen computers checking in with a server we have (software pre-loaded), and I have full access to the systems. What's the best way to deal with this situation? The local police (to the theft) have been contacted several times and seem to be clueless. I personally have no financial interest in these computers, I just don't like atom-thieves. What's the best way to handle knowing the IPs, email addresses, MySpace sites, the Google login, etc. when working with law enforcement? The officer I spoke with (who genuinely seemed to care) didn't know an IP address from a mailing address, so I called others. Nobody cared. Anyone have any ideas?"

Open Source only viable way to do shared-services

Government IT has had a shoddy record under the present government. Way too much money spent for absurdly poor results. The main problem being the tenuous link between the way the Gov does IT and the real world.

Sony, six cable companies adopt two-way CableCARD tech

CableCARD technology has always faced a major adoption hurdle. While the cards themselves can handle two-way communication, TVs and set-top boxes were unable to use them for anything beyond one-way traffic. The lack of video on demand services and electronic program guides (to say nothing of the problems this posed for switched digital video) meant that CableCARD solutions were generally inferior to the boxes provided by the local cable company. Until now.

Monster iSoniCast Although pressing heads together and splitting earphones is a resourceful way to share iPod songs with friends, there is a better way. Cover Stream: A great Cover Flow iTunes controller

There's no question that Cover Flow is a killer way to browse one's iTunes music catalog. Cover Flow is the closest true music enthusiasts can get to thumbing through a stack of vinyls or CDs in the digital age, and it's a really purty way for the rest of us to actually see what albums we've collected over the years. In fact, this is such a great way to interact with music that Snarb decided to build an iTunes controller with Cover Flow as its centerpiece.

New Agreement May End the Cable Box

esocid clues us to news that Sony and the National Cable and Telecommunications Association have come to agreement on the way forward for two-way TV without set-top boxes. The actual agreement was not made public, pending review by other members of the Consumer Electronics Association, and as a result the coverage of the agreement is uniformly pretty incoherent. The background is that the NCTA and the CEA submitted competing proposals to the FCC on how to handle two-way, interactive TV services. None of the articles I turned up made clear what the future of the CableCard is to be. This was an interim solution to allow competition in set-top box manufacture, but its adoption has been plagued with problems. "Sony and the cable companies — Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter, Cablevision, and Bright House Networks — agreed to adopt:

Virus Protection on Leopard? I Don't Think So.

(Column) - When you install a new operating system, everything on your computer tends to feel a lot fresher. Even though some of the stuff on your hard drive may be several years old, a new OS gives you a revised way to use that information. Since installing Leopard, this fresh feeling has extended to the way I view viruses and other assorted software and Internet vulnerabilities on OS X. I never really had a problem in this regard on Tiger, and now that I’ve upgraded to Leopard, everything feels even more secure. I trust the advancements of OS X and its good track record to keep my computer safe, but perhaps I shouldn’t feel that way.

Blog Your Way to Savings at the Store

The Web has created many opportunities to learn how to save money on just about everything you buy. Before the Internet made terabytes of information readily available, the only way to do good consumer research on a major purchase was to subscribe to magazines like Consumer Reports or go to the library. In reality, most of us just went to the car dealership or to the appliance store and relied on salespeople to educate us. However, I'm not sure the salespeople were the best source of objective consumer advice.
