Fake priest caught in confessional

Confessionalblog385x185_2 Bess writes: A bizarre case of identity fraud has surfaced in the Vatican: the Osservatore Romano, the official Vatican newspaper, reports that a fake priest was caught in St Peter’s Basilica attempting to enter the confessional box. The 30-year-old man was subsequently sentenced in a special Vatican court. And, according to this morning's papers, the sentencing judge discovered he was a serial offender. Gianluigi Marrone, one a handful of judges employed at the court, explained: "He had priest's robes on but to the expert eye of our security staff he raised suspicions, He was acting strangely and so he was stopped and checked. He had an identity card which said he was a priest but a quick check established it was bogus.

Warner Music Admits It Hired Police Investigator Before The Pirate Bay Investigation Was Complete

Back in April, we wrote about the fact that a police investigator in Sweden who had been in charge of the case against The Pirate Bay had been hired by Warner Brothers. At the time, there was no proof that he had been hired during the investigation. In fact, it appeared otherwise. Based on this, I didn't see why this was such a problem -- though many people in the comments felt I was being naive. And, indeed, it turns out that a further investigation has now turned up the news that, in fact, the guy was hired while the investigation was ongoing. Though he's now left that job, this does call into question the entire investigation against The Pirate Bay.

Farm It Out

Four years ago, Me Ra Koh was feeling exasperated with her up-and-coming wedding photography business. “I was struggling,” recalls the Seattle-based shooter. “I felt that however well I was doing, it was never enough.” Between filling back orders for prints, designing albums, marketing herself and keeping on top of expenses, Koh was overwhelmed – and that was even before she’d started a day’s shooting.

Custom Flame Painting - Lay Flames Like A Pro

I've liked flames since I was a little kid growing up in Southern California during the '50s. I can't remember if the first time I ever saw something flamed was in one of my dad's custom car magazines, or on a hot-rod driving down the street. I do remember by the time I was in elementary school I was getting in trouble with my teachers for drawing flames on all of my school papers. When old people used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I told them a custom painter. By the time I was 14 I was custom painting all of my friend's bicycles in the neighborhood. By age 17, I had opened up a custom paint shop out of my parent's garage.

Blogger reactions to Obama

Andrew Sullivan, a gay Obama supporter with strong opinions against the Clintons, said: "If I needed reassurance that this man is the most formidable force in American politics today, his speech tonight confirmed it. It was shrewd - with an artful positioning on Iraq. It was graceful - with respect for McCain's service and Clinton's tenacity. It was brutal - in turning around McCain's Iraq visit meme to domestic economic woes. It was patriotic - in its evocation of Gettysburg and the Second World War. It was outer-directed: not for Obama the recourse to self-satisfied identity politics of the kind used by the Clintons because they often have nothing else. It was moving. I thought I even saw some suggestions of tears as he remembered his grandmother.

Live Blogging III: Women in Poverty

This is a wonderful-written article. As the past leader of a Ivy League college pro-life group, I struggled with how to present well-reasoned articles to pro-choicers who violently objected to my position, thought it idiotic, and argued exactly from the position you've identified: that the baby was an unfair burden to some poor woman who bore no responsibility for it, or that the baby was destined for a life of "inhumane" suffering. Your arguments are a thoughtful, realistic and considerate response to those pro-choicers. I would love to know how you respond to those who argue in favor of abortion for those who have been raped. I imagine it was an issue you wrestled with yourself in your conversion. The best I could ever articulate was to argue that a further act of violence was not truly going to solve anything for these women; it was no

Security concerns arise for home workers allowed to VPN into company networks, Cisco 800 Series was the perfect fit

I was recently brought in by a company who had a security breach due to a home user who was allowed to create a VPN tunnel back to the home office. This was done by creating an end point to end point connection from the users home wlan router which has a vpn option on it to the home office vpn router. Normally this would not be an issue but the user set up different ssid's for home and work, the only ssid that had any type of WEP on it was the one used for the company laptop. The other ssid's created for home users and children did not have a WEP settings created.

Was it a bird or was it a plane?

A new study of extinct flying reptiles called kuehneosaurs, has shown that of the of the two genera found in Britain, Kuehneosuchus was a glider while Kuehneosaurus, with much shorter "wings," was a parachutist.

Game Boys, Abie Rotenberg and my ride home

I was working at the radio station minding my own business when suddenly I was called to the on-air studio. The Aliyah Revolution with Go'el and Dovid was in the middle of its live broadcast. I thought maybe there was some kind of technical emergency. I rushed in the studio, only to have Dovid ask me if I ever heard of the group Game Boys. Yes, I replied, I had seen the cover of their 2006 disc Game Boys: The Album, but that was as far as I got. I didn't actually listen to it. Well Dovid had in fact listened to it and excitedly wanted to know my opinion and if I could run to the disc library and grab it for him.

The Golden RodTronics Tour Blog 1: Rolling to the Rockies

It was a wild weekend in St Paul. The Back to the 50's Weekend was fantastic with over 11,700 registered vehicles cruising the Minnesota State Fairgrounds all weekend. Sunday over 600 vendor spaces were filled with all sorts of treasures. By 1 PM it was time to head on down the road. The Classic Automobilia Tour from the Hot Rod Reunion to Back to the 50's had been a huge success but it was time to begin the third leg of what we had called the Rod Tour Triple Crown. The Golden RODtronics Tour was heading to the NSRA Rocky Mountain Nationals in Pueblo Colorado.

3G iPhone Going For Market Share

The rumor mill was proven right this time round. The new 3G phone delivers on all that was expected from it the past few weeks – 3G, low price, GPS, push e-mail, tighter security, and longer battery life. The surprise factor was surprisingly not there, since we expect a lot from Apple (AAPL). I read somewhere that even video conferencing was on the wish list, but there is no video conferencing in this one. However, the highlight of the event was that the 3G iPhone will launch in 22 countries on July 11, and will roll out to 70 countries by the end of the year. In addition, of course, there are the enterprise features. Recent coverage on Apple, which discusses its moves towards vertical integration, is available here.

Critic Says Judge's Web Site Was Distributing MP3 Files and Was Target of Previous Complaint

Alex Kozinski, the federal judge who has been in the spotlight this week -- fairly or unfairly -- for posting sexually explicit images on his personal web site, was the target of a complaint in 2005 for posting a different kind of material on the site -- a document related to a case that was before the Ninth Circuit Appeals Court.

Dody Goodman, Comedienne and Actress, Dead at 92

Dody Goodman, whose ditzy comic persona was well known to patrons of theatre, film and television from the 1950s on, died June 22 at the Actors Fund Home in New Jersey, a spokesperson for the Fund confirmed. Her age was thought to be 92 by many accounts, though the subject of her birthdate was something she was known to falsify throughout her career. Her agent said she was 94.

A growth on a kidney removed from the conductor James Levine was malignant, but the cancer was caught early and no further treatment is needed, the Boston Symphony Orchestra said. Doctors in New York removed the right kidney last week because the growth was causing Levine, the 65-year-old music director of both the BSO and the Metropolitan Opera, pressure and discomfort. The surgery forced him to miss the remainder of the BSO's Tanglewood season. Levine's brother, Tom Levine , said that doctors found a malignant growth on the kidney, but that it was very small and confined. "Doctors reported the surgery was completely curative and no further treatment is necessary," he said.

From No Loan to Home Own (While in Escrow!) - San Fernando Valley Realtor, Grace Michelman, Sets a New Standard for Credit Recovery

Realtor Grace Michelman understands a difficult situation, but nothing could have prepared her for the credit storm that was Jack Granville(a). His FICO score was poor, his loan approval was non-existent, and his money was in escrow. Grace knew the situation was tough, but her expertise would shine through. Thanks to her, Jack is moving into his new house next week. Here is their story:

Review: Lightweight Linux Distributions

"Years ago I already played a bit with Linux (It was Redhat 5.0 on my 386). At that time I thought the operating system wasn't yet ready for the desktop and after a while I reinstalled Windows. Things changed when Ubuntu 5.04 was released. This was the first time I really enjoyed Linux; the most important things worked, it was easy and it was just great! Because I liked Ubuntu so much, I decided to install it on my laptop too and also this worked very good. However, these days Ubuntu is way to heavy to run on my laptop. Because I wanted to have a fast system I tried to install Gentoo Linux; the installation took 3 days but I ended up with a very fast and responsible system. However, every time I had to install a program it took ages to compile the software.

Gore's Bold Plan to Save the Planet

When I caught up with Al Gore at his home in Nashville last December, the former Vice President turned green guru was in a pensive mood. I was surprised he was just finishing his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, which he was due to give in Stockholm a few days later. For a man who had lost the Presidency in the most agonizing way possible, winning the Nobel should have offered some consolation. But when I asked Gore if he felt vindicated, he shook his head. "It's hard to celebrate recognition of an effort that has thus far failed," he said. He was referring to his work not only to awaken the world to the danger of climate change, but to get us to really do something about it. "I'm not finished, but thus far, I have failed. We have all failed.

Blogging about Apple pays better than practicing medicine

Arnold Kimn, MD, is quitting his medical practice to blog full-time about Apple because he found it was more profitable than practicing medicine. In 2000 while he was a fourth-year medical student, Kim launched the site MacRumors, a site devoted to news and rumors about Apple. Traffic grew over the years, and around 2003-2004, during the time he was starting his nephrology fellowship, ad revenue from the site started growing. Eventually, Kim says he was making more from MacRumors than he was from practicing nephrology and decided to quit medicine.

Running Xen

David Martinjak writes "Running Xen: A Hands-On Guide to the Art of Virtualization was published by Prentice Hall, and authored by Jeanna N. Matthews, Eli M. Dow, Todd Deshane, Wenjin Hu, Jeremy Bongio, Patrick F. Wilbur, and Brendan Johnson. The book, which will be referred to as simply Running Xen, was a great resource on Xen and virtualization from the administration side. A wide range of topics was covered from installing Xen all the way up to managing virtual resources, including migrating guest environments. Overall, the explanations were concise and understandable; while the information was presented in a straightforward manner. Running Xen was definitely a useful resource for administering systems with Xen." Keep reading for the rest of David's review.

Royal run around at GPL

It is with great consternation that I pen this letter after an entire working afternoon was spent at GPL, Main Street. I accompanied a family member to GPL yesterday with regards to an application for a new meter from the entity. After obtaining all the prerequisite documents, the individual was being given the "royal run around" to pay for the meter and receive the service. The applicant was told by the counter staff that the address where she previously lived owed the entity $15,000 plus and as such the applicant could not receive a meter until this amount was paid. It must be noted that the meter, where the applicant previously lived, was not in the applicant's name and the person in whose name the meter is registered is presently living at the said address and receiving electricity from GPL.

Best Buy leaves out failed government play Chasers chastized, then complimented

One facet of Best Buy for Business (Best Buy for Business builds data powerhouse, BtoB's Lead Generation Guide 2008, page 6 ) that was not brought up by Best Buy (not surprisingly, and I am sure Best Buy would like everyone to forget) was the Best Buy for Government initiative launched at about the same time. There was lots of noise in the government market when Best Buy for Government showed up at [the FOSE Exposition and Conference] in 2005 and 2006, but largely because of T-shirts and big bags, not product. There was no substance, little execution and no value proposition. And now Best Buy for Government is gonethree years and out. The BBG Web site, which was never more than a home page with a phone number, had the tag line The convenience of in-store pick up.

Control DVD

Control is Anton Corbijns film about the life of Ian Curtis, of the Manchester Band Joy Division, which was in existence from 1976 until 1980. Corbijn, who is best known as a music photographer and video maker, chose to make this biopic due to the fact that Joy Division was a huge influence in his life. Corbijn describes in one of the extras that upon first hearing Joy Division, he packed his bags and moved from Holland to London, to be close to the spot where Joy Division was making this style of music. Two weeks into the move, he was backstage and met the band, where a friendship with the band was created.
