Warhammer Online Starting Strong, But No Threat To WoW">

Analyst: Warhammer Online Starting Strong, But No Threat To WoW [10.14.08] Mythic Entertainment's Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is off to a strong start with 750k users, but it isn't going to cause panic in Blizzard's offices any time soon, says Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian, predicting one million new World Of Warcraft subscribers over the next year.

Warhammer Online patch 1.0.4 hits the live servers

As this post goes live the servers are still down, updating merrily for the latest meaty patch to Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. Mythic Entertainment has been johnny-on-the-spot with Warhammer updates since the game went live lo these few weeks ago, and it's great to see them continually tweaking the concept of the core RvR game. The patch (which is listed and formatted in full below the cut) addresses a number of issues, but here are some bullet-pointy highlights:

Altdorf is burning (Warhammer city siege endgame begun)

Despite hopes by the developers that Warhammer's city siege endgame wouldn't begin for at least a month, it appears the siege has already begun. Just a week and a half after the launch of the title Altdorf is burning on the EU server Karak Eight Peaks. The Book of Grudges was the first to report on the Altdorf assault, with Wizards and Wenches offering up commentary directly from the forums. From the sounds of things, there were major issues associated with the very first Warhammer city siege ... so many that Mythic might even call foul and reset things.

Warhammer Scenarios-Leveling without PvE

Warhammer is all about RvR. The game is primarily designed around the "WAR" concept. A player must utilize both RvR and PvE effectively in order to expedite the leveling process. Since the game thrives on RvR, players who primarily PvE, will miss out on a lot of what WAR has to offer. This is where Scenarios start to play a huge roll. No longer....

Analyst: Warhammer Base to "Level Off" at 250-300K

Edge writes: "Publisher EA is targeting "around 250,000 subscribers" for Mythic's Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, one analyst speculates, suggesting a substantial drop-off of users after the free month is up.

Large Warhammer Patch In December, Two New Classes

Eurogamer reports on an announcement from Mythic CEO Mark Jacobs regarding the future of Warhammer Online. Jacobs said the first big content patch will be coming in December, and it will contain two new classes, the Black Guard and the Knight of the Blazing Sun. These are two of the four classes lost to the pre-launch content cuts. A number of other changes are on their way as well. "The Knight of the Blazing Sun is described as a tactical leader using Battlefield Commands, while the Black Guard is simply 'the embodiment of hatred and disdain.' The arrival of the two new careers will mean that every race in the game has a damage-taking tanking archetype. Of the originally planned careers, only the Dwarf Hammerer and Greenskin Choppa, both melee damage-dealers, will remain on the cutting room floor.

Mythic Launches Warhammer Online

After four days of "head-start" players getting the run of the servers, Warhammer Online launched today to the rest of the public. Mythic took the opportunity to explain why they think World of Warcraft players should give them a chance, highlighting their focus on PvP (or Realm-vs-Realm in this case), and their desire to keep time-intensive activities to a minimum. Creative director Paul Barnett says it's "a bit like Batman." 1.5 million copies of the game have already been sent to retailers, so they're clearly expecting a solid launch. The folks over at Massively have developed an excellent series of guides for players looking to get into the game. They explain and contrast general career choices and look at individual classes as well. They also have a variety of interviews and descriptions of gameplay.

Want to leave WoW for Conan or Warhammer? Good luck

Despite his rather stoic delivery during an Activision Blizzard conference call earlier today, Blizzard's Mike Morhaime undoubtedly took some thrill reciting the following statistics relating to players trying to leave World of Warcraft for the competition: Of the players who cited Funcom's Age of Conan as their reason for leaving WoW, a whopping 68% returned to Azeroth; of the players who cited Warhammer: Age of Reckoning as the impetus behind their departure, a less overwhelming (but similarly impressive) 46% of players ultimately leapt right back into Blizzard's no-doubt strategically receptive embrace.
