BLOG CENTRAL - ROBERT HIGHT

In Reading on Saturday one of my guys came up to me and said there was a guy that wanted to talk with me. I have to be honest I had just been out in my pit running around for what seemed like a couple of hours so I really just wanted a little break. I was trying to get into race mode. I had my fire suit on and we weren’t really qualified really well. I just wasn’t really in a good frame of mind. My guys said they thought I’d want to talk with this person so they brought him into my pit.

Give Up the Fight For Personal Privacy?

KlaymenDK writes "Over the last decade or so, I have strived to maintain my privacy. I have uninstalled Windows, told my friends 'sorry' when they wanted me to join Facebook, had a fight with my brother when he wanted to move the family email hosting to Gmail, and generally held back on my personal information online. But since, amongst all of my friends, I am the only one doing this, it may well be that my battle is lost already. Worse, I'm really putting myself out of the loop, and it is starting to look like self-flagellation. Indeed, it is a common occurrence that my wife or friends will strike up a conversation based on something from their Facebook 'wall' (whatever that is). Becoming ever more unconnected with my friends, live or online, is ultimately harming my social relations.

Why Game Developers Go Rogue

cliffski writes "Jay Barnson interviews the new crop of indie game developers. How could anybody abandon the steady paychecks, access to the best tools and engines, large teams of skilled colleagues and the glory of working on one of next holiday season's blockbusters for a chance to labor in relative obscurity on tiny, niche titles? Steven Peeler was a senior programmer at Ritual Entertainment. For him, leaving and forming the one-man studio Soldak Entertainment came down to a desire for creative freedom. 'I really wanted to work on an RPG, and Ritual only made shooters,' he says. 'There were some annoying politics going on that was really frustrating, I disagreed with the direction the company was taking, I was really tired of pushy publishers and I just wanted to do my own thing.

.NET Tip: Determining the Type of a Character Variable

How do you determine what type a character variable holds? Is it a number, a letter, a punctuation mark, or somthing else? One answer is to take advantage of the built-in static methods of the System.Char data type directly. You could use Char.IsDigit(), for example, to determine whether a character variable contained a digit in the range 0-9. There are other static methods that you can use to determine if a character is a letter, symbol, punctuation, and so forth. In some instances, using these static methods may be your best choice. In my case, however, I wanted something a little different. To keep my application code clean, I wanted a single method call that could return the type of character a variable contained. One method to do this is to create an extension method for the System.
