Kotaku: Readers Steven K., Eamon and Chris A. send this one in late, a screenshot from Chapter 6 in Dead Space that will help the rest of us decode what the alien scribblings on the walls mean. Some smudges on a few alien letters, plus some additional human phonetics (SS and TH, and "dbl letters"), but it's a start for would-be graffiti decoders. Thanks guys.

An anonymous reader writes "Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's HCI Institute have developed a new input technology that allows mobile devices to use surfaces they rest on, like tables, for gestural finger input. This is achieved with some clever acoustic tricks — basically taking advantage of high frequency sound propagation through dense materials. Their video highlights some neat applications, such as controlling an MP3 player by scratching on a wall and muting a cell phone by scratching on a table. Further details are available in the academic paper (PDF)."

I know I'm not the only one who's left on my PS3, justified it through Folding@Home, but really just wanted to recharge the USB controllers. I know I'm not the only one because today Sony has announced their solution. They are releasing a two-port USB AC adapter that will allow gamers to recharge controllers from a wall socket. The plug will be available mid-December in Japan for about $30 (there's no US release date at this time). And yes, it's a complicated solution to a problem that shouldn't exist. Bacterial cell walls protect cells against mechanical stress and help maintain cell shape. The stress-bearing layer of the cell wall is called the sacculus (green layer) and is built from peptidoglycan. In Gram-negative cells, the sacculus is sandwiched between the outer (dark gray) and inner membranes (light gray). Electron cryotomographic analysis of purified sacculi showed that peptidoglycan is arranged as a "disorganized layer." Credit: Everett Kane and Ariane Briegel.

A cat-bot that climbs the walls using its claws, a dog-droid that responds to human movements, and a robot which releases glue through its wheels while scaling buildings met Wednesday in Herzliya. This might sound like the beginning of a joke or a description of the scene of a science fiction movie like Star Wars. In reality though, this was the scene at a robot exhibition held on Wednesday at a conference in the central coastal town.
