The recent release of the G1 (aka Google phone) through T-Mobile and soon to be released Blackberry Bold & Storm prompted me to compare search activity among the new handheld devices. We often compare the search volume on new products to gauge the strength of consumer interest and how that may translate into sales. The Blackberry Storm was the most commonly searched product with 3.5x the volume of searches for Blackberry Bold and 3.9x the volume of the G1. The gap between the Blackberry Storm and Google phone was the smallest, with the Storm receiving 1.9x the search volume for the 4 weeks ending October 18, 2008.

(October 15, 2008) After months of steady gains, the merchant-services portion of PayPal Inc.’s transaction volume topped the volume coming from eBay Inc auctions for the first time in the third quarter, eBay reported on Wednesday. In line with this result, the online auctioneer also reported PayPal has been adopted by 35 of the 100 largest online merchants. Altogether, more than 1 million merchants now use PayPal, eBay chief executive John Donahoe said in an earnings call with analysts. But Donahoe and Bob Swan, eBay’s chief financial officer, assumed a somber tone during the call regarding the slumping economy and its impact on eBay businesses, including PayPal.

Add dedicated volume controls to the list of dwindling MP3 player features. Most MP3 players on the market today integrate volume adjustment capability into their main navigation controls, meaning you have to be on a playback screen to tweak listening levels. With traditional iPods and devices such as the Sansa Fuze, a spin of the wheel accomplishes the task, while most others combine volume with the up and down menu navigation buttons on a four-way control pad.

My MP3 collection is about as eclectic as they come. I've got songs ripped from CDs, songs downloaded from countless online stores, and songs collected from, oh, let's say points unknown. Consequently, the volume levels are inconsistent across the library: Some songs are too loud, some are too soft, and some are juuuuust right.
