VMware Server 2 shows some improvement

In the early days of desktop virtualization, there were few low-priced alternatives to VMware Workstation that didn't involve a steep learning curve. Even the freely available VirtualBox didn't affect Workstation's market domination and instead faced competition from the newly rebranded VMware GSX server, which was offered for free as VMware Server. Despite being an entry-level server virtualization product, many people used VMware Server on the desktop. Taking that into consideration, you have to look at the recently released VMware Server 2, from two angles -- as an entry-level server virtualization platform and as an alternative to desktop virtualization products like VirtualBox. With its performance and other improvements, it does enough to keep existing customers happy, but probably not enough to get others to switch.

VMware Helps the City of Calgary Increase Virtualization Application Availability

VMware has announced that The City of Calgary has deployed VMware's management and virtualization suite, VMware Infrastructure 3. With VMware, The City is containing spiraling IT costs, accelerating the development of new online services for its one million residents, and helping ensure application availability for The City's 32 business units, such as the Calgary Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, Finance & Supply, and Water Services.

VMware Brings Virtualization to Mobile Phones

VMware's Mobile Virtualization Platform (MVP) brings virtualization to mobile phones. VMware's MVP will help handset vendors reduce time to market, and allow multiple profiles on the same phone. VMware says MVP will also offer easier migration to open operating systems. VMware's MVP will allow services to run on secure virtual machines.

VMware to Bring Virtualization to Mobile Devices

VMware, Inc., a provider of virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacenter, today announced plans to bring virtualization and its benefits to mobile phones through the new VMware Mobile Virtualization Platform. Built on technology acquired from Trango Virtual Processors in October 2008, the company claims that its VMware MVP will help handset vendors reduce development time and get mobile phones with value-added services to market faster. In addition, it says that end users will benefit by being able to run multiple profiles – for example, one for personal use and one for work use – on the same phone.

Inside VMware's 'Virtual Datacenter OS'

snydeq writes "Neil McAllister cuts through VMware's marketing hype to examine the potential impact of VMware's newly pronounced 'virtual datacenter OS' — which the company has touted as the death knell for the traditional OS. Literally an operating system for the virtual datacenter, VDC OS is an umbrella concept to build services and APIs that make it easier to provision and allocate resources for apps in an abstract way. Under the system, McAllister writes, apps are reduced to 'application workloads' tailored through vApp, a tool that will allow developers to 'encapsulate the entire app infrastructure in a single bundle — servers and all.' The concept could help solve the current bugbear of programming, parallel processing, McAllister concludes, assuming VMware succeeds.

Zenoss adds VMware monitoring

Zenoss Inc., the Annapolis, Md.-based open source IT systems management company, has released a new version of its enterprise application that integrates monitoring of physical machines and VMware virtual machines (VMs) in the same console. Building on its initial limited foray last year into virtualization monitoring of VMware and Xen-based machines, Zenoss 2.3 taps native VMware application program interfaces (APIs) and its own data modeling tools to pinpoint the location, configuration and state of VMs and track how they change in real time, according to CEO and co-founder Bill Karpovich.

United States: McAfee announces partnerships with HP, Intel, and VMWare.

Security software provider McAfee has announced partnerships with HP, Intel, and VMware to deliver best-in-class security for networking products, PCs, and virtualization platforms. It said its information security products will be combined with HP ProCurve's networking product portfolio to simplify networking and security from the edge to the network core. The company has also joined the HP ProCurve Alliance to enable open-standards networking solutions certified for interoperability. McAfee said it will use Intel vPro technology to allow IT staff to discover and remediate security problems on PCs outside of business hours and report issues to the McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator management console. Building on its existing relationship with VMware, the company will ship its McAfee VirusScan Plus software with VMware Fusion desktop virtualiza

VMware's VirtualCenter coming to Linux, iPhone

VMware CTO Stephen Herrod drew a cheer at the VMworld conference Wednesday by announcing plans to bring the next version of VMware's VirtualCenter management software to Linux and the iPhone.

VMware Pushing Virtual Machines for Smartphones, Will Support Parallel OSes

VMware, which consumers know mostly for their Fusion desktop virtualization software, is moving into the mobile space, albeit surreptitiously. The company has announced VMware MVP, a thin layer of software that will interface between handsets' hardware and operating system, allowing for a standardized development platform across any handsets that include it. What does this mean for regular consumers? For now, not much. If the tech finds enough support for hardware vendors, though, the consequences could be major.

VMware Virtualization in Medical Sector

"VMware is helping make our hospital more efficient and effective," said Meraz Nasir, manager of infrastructure at Interfaith Medical Center as Interfaith Medical Center announced their decision to deploy VMware Infrastructure 3 as the platform for the hospital's Microsoft Windows-based applications.

VMware's Mobile Virtualization Strategy Calls for Open Source Responses

Proprietary virtualization player VMWare has just announced its VMWare Mobile Virtualization Platform (MVP) designed to bring virtualization to mobile phones. It's due to ship in 2009, and is a lightweight software layer that can run even on memory-constrained phones. For several reasons, this virtualization platform could have an impact on mobile phones running open source operating systems, and on application development for mobile open source operating systems.

VMware goes embedded

Enterprise virtualization software giant VMware has launched its first virtualization product aimed at mobile phones. The Linux-compatible Mobile Virtualization Platform (MVP) is based on technology that VMware acquired last month when it quietly bought French virtualization vendor Trango Virtual Processors.

VMware's VirtualCenter Heading to iPhone

On Wednesday, during the VMworld conference, VMware CTO Stephen Herrod announced that his company was planning to bring the next version of VMware’s VirtualCenter management software to users of an Apple iPhone, as well as to Linux ones.

VMWare Promises Multiple OSs On One Cellphone

superglaze writes to tell us that VMWare has announced a large effort behind their Mobile Virtualization Platform, promising the possibility of multiple operating systems on mobile devices. "The company described MVP as a "thin layer of software" that will be embedded in handsets and 'be optimized to run efficiently on low-power-consuming and memory-constrained mobile phones.' Asked whether MVP would offer something different from the abstraction already provided by mobile Java, VMware's European product director Fredrik Sjostedt told ZDNet UK that MVP would require less recoding. 'If you want to have an application run on a Java-specific appliance, you need to code it for Java," Sjostedt said. "What we're introducing with MVP is an [embedded] abstraction layer below that, between the physical hardware and the software layer.

VMware Workstation 6.5 consolidates the best of desktop virtualization

Virtualization software can help you run programs that your native Linux distro wouldn't. While Linux users have many virtualization options, none comes close to the all-encompassing VMware Workstation 6.5. Introduced last month, VMware Workstation 6.5 continues the tradition of outshining and outpacing the competition with a host of useful new features, and boldly goes where no virtualization software has gone before -- into the realm of virtual machines with accelerated 3-D graphics. Despite the advances, some of the new features are still in beta, so Workstation 6.5 might not be the best virtualization option for everyone.
