According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death in the US, claiming more than 340,000 people each year. Surviving SCA is largely dependent on how quickly a victim is defibrillated. For each minute that defibrillation is delayed, the victim's chance of survival decreases by seven to ten percent. The victim suffers irreversible brain damage within four to six minutes after cardiac arrest. After ten minutes, few victims of sudden cardiac arrest survive.

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Justice Khurshid Anwar Bhindar granted bail to Muhammad Arif of Pakpattan, who is accused of trying to rape a girl in his locality. Justice Bhindar observed that the accused was nominated in the first information report (FIR), however, the evidence on record was not solid enough. He said that according to the FIR, the alleged victim had dragged the complainant’s sister and tried to rape her, which seemed implausible, irrational and unbelievable. He said that the idea that both witnesses stood by and did nothing while the victim’s modestly was being attacked by an unarmed man did not appeal to one’s mind. He also said that no medical examination of the victim had been conducted in order to establish any marks of violence on her body.

An alleged (and formerly convicted and released) rapist was picked up in Staten Island, New York after being selected from a lineup by the victim. Sources said the woman struck back during the attack by stabbing the perpetrator in the neck with a nearby iPod charger, and the man picked out of the lineup bore the twin bruises of an AC adapter on his neck. He fled the scene before police arrived, but left his yellow jacket (emblazoned with Sylvester the Cat) behind, and in addition to the victim's testimony will hopefully be enough to put this creep away for life. Or several lifetimes. [Gothamist]

In July a worm was found spreading through Facebook. It was essentially shut down by blocking the web sites that were propagating it. A NetworkWorld article this week says that the worm has resurfaced leveraging the Google Reader and Google Picassa tools available from....Google (duh!). According to the article "The links appear safe because they go to Google.com Web sites, but once the victim arrives on the Google Reader or Picasa page, he is invited to click on a video or a Web link. The victim is then told he needs to download special codec decompression software to view the video." Read the article for more information and make sure you have your antimalware and other security software up to date. More importantly, exercise both caution and common sense when clicking on links and visiting web sites.
