VIA Releases FOSS Graphics Driver

billybob2 writes "VIA has released a 113,800 line open source graphics driver with full mode-setting support for CRT, LCD, and DVI devices along with 2D, X-Video, and cursor acceleration. Harald Welte, VIA's open source representative, states that the next step is to add 3D (see preview), TV-out, and hardware codec support while integrating this work with existing open source projects. VIA has pre-installed Linux on a significant portion of the company's latest products, including the EVEREX gPC2, 15.4" gBook, and CloudBook. It has also helped port the open source CoreBoot BIOS (previously LinuxBIOS) to several of its motherboards." VIA seems to be making good on the promise of its open source initiative announced last April.

Asus strikes m-commerce deal with 2Shop4

Asus has signed a text & shop partnership agreement with m-commerce venture 2Shop4. 2Shop4 currently enables users to buy goods via a SMS while on the move. Scheduled for launch in November, the new m-commerce development is expected to allow products to be sold directly through advertisements or direct marketing. 2shop4 aims to enable users to buy goods and services using their mobile phone, via 2shop4 'Buy-Now' adverts. The 'Buy-Now' text system turns adverts, magazines, posters, digital, interactive medium into a direct sales tool via mobile phone SIM&PIN. 2shop4 provides brand owners with a 'Buy-Now' shopping mall, via texting 'Brandwords'. The brand owner selects their key 'Brandword/s' for SIM&PIN texting, while consumers can text the Brandword/s and the goods or services are purchased and delivered.

Via Technologies announced a nano-ITX board targeting compact industrial PCs and embedded automation. The Epia N700 includes Via's 1.5GHz C7 or 500MHz Eden ULV processors, gigabit Ethernet, two SATA ports, four USB ports, four COM ports, plus Compact Flash and Mini PCI expansion, the company says.

VIA releases open source Xorg driver

I am very happy to see this! It's one more step that VIA has been working on to improve and show their support for Free Software and Linux. Please notice that this driver (as opposed to VIA's proprietary binary-only Xorg driver) has no support for 3D, hardware video codec or TV encoder support. Nevertheless, it is a big step ahead.

Canada Gets the BlackBerry Storm Too, via Telus for Now

The same day RIM has officially unveiled its first touchscreen product – BlackBerry Storm – the handset was confirmed for a release in Canada too, via Telus. This, although, in the press material issued by RIM, the company only mentioned that the smartphone would be out via Verizon and Vodafone. Anyway, it's somehow natural that the Storm be on sale in Canada too – since this is the home country of Research in Motion.

Distributor Speakal announced it has brought the iPig docking station, complete with five speaker,s to the US market. The iPig is rated at 25W of total power, and includes a 4-inch subwoofer with adjustable bass control. In addition to being compatible with iPods via included cradles, charging them via their docks, the iPig will also connect to portable audio players, gaming consoles and other audio equipment via a 3.5mm phone jack.

Checkin via web, kiosks for MAS customers

Malaysian Airlines (MAS) customers will be able to check-in via the web and self-serve kiosks for all international travel by next year. In a statement issued by MAS recently, Dr Amin Khan, Senior General Manager (Transition Management), Malaysian Airlines confirmed that international customers will be able to do web check-in by next year. “They can also select their preferred seats online 24 hours before flight departure and print their boarding passes,” said Amin, adding that customers using the web and kiosk check-in can also drop off their baggage, if any, at designated airport counters.
