How windy is it on Venus? Venus Express answers

It is well known that winds on Venus are extremely fast and powerful. Now, European Space Agency's (ESA) Venus Express has, for the first time, put together a 3-D picture of the venusian winds for an entire planetary hemisphere.

Doorstep Astronomy: Venus Shines Bright

Currently, the planet Venus is visible, albeit very low in the western evening sky right after sundown. Those with obstructions such as trees or buildings toward the west may not be able to see Venus yet, thanks to its low altitude. But this current evening apparition of Venus is going to evolve into a very good one in the coming days and weeks, so let's get into a fuller explanation of what is to come.

Venus Express Searches For Life On Earth

Scientists using ESA’s Venus Express are trying to observe whether Earth is habitable. Silly, you might think, when we know that Earth is richly stocked with life. In fact, far from being a pointless exercise, Venus Express is paving the way for an exciting new era in astronomy.

Winds on Venus are Variable, Cyclical

The Venus Express spacecraft has been continuously monitoring the planet in orbit since 2006, and scientists now have enough data to start building a complete picture of the planet’s atmospheric phenomena. They have put together a 3-D picture of Venusian winds for the southern hemisphere. It was known that the winds on Venus are extremely fast and powerful, but what was not known was their extreme variability. The winds are highly influenced by the sun, as well as an unusual and unknown mechanism that seems to re-set itself every five days.

Doorstep astronomy: Venus shines bright

On August 29 from midnorthern latitudes, Venus will be visible low above the western horizon after sunset. If you're lucky you might catch Mars and Mercury too. If you can't find it, keep looking during the coming weeks; Venus will set later after sunset every night, eventually becoming an unmissable "evening star."
