The v5.00 (PSP) and v2.50 (PS3) firmwares are due at some point later this month and will add some new functionalities to the respective devices. The PSP firmware will grant you sign ups to the Playstation Network and Playstation Store, which means you'll be able to download games directly to your PSP (Wi-Fi connection permitting). The 2.50 PS3 firmware will add a number of enhancements, including support for the official bluetooth headset, a Scene Search feature for video similar to that found on the PSP, as well as the ability to capture in-game screenshots (support on a game by game basis). You'll also get the option to tell you PS3 to automatically turn off after a download or installation has completed. Full details on the Playstation Blog.

kwanbis writes "After more than four years, a new MP3@128kbps listening test is finally open at HydrogenAudio.org! The featured encoders are: LAME 3.97, LAME 3.98.2, iTunes 8.0.1.11, Fraunhofer IIS mp3surround CL v1.5, and Helix v5.1 2005.08.09. The low anchor is l3enc 0.99a. The purpose of this test is to find out which popular MP3 VBR encoder outputs the best quality on bitrates around 128 kbps. All encoders experienced major or minor updates that should improve audio quality or encoding speed, and we have a totally new encoder on board. Note that you do not have to test all samples — it is a great help even if you test one or two. The test is scheduled to end on November 22nd, 2008."

Our news radar picked up something pretty interesting from Engadget this morning, specifically related to the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia. Apparently, a list of Nokia devices in development (or developed) has landed in Engadget's hands, and we had quite an interesting read. Whilst we await the arrival of the first Nokia touch screen device, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic or more commonly known as the Nokia Tube, we noticed that there'll definitely be more devices supporting the Symbian S60 V5.0 OS, one of which includes a possible device codenamed the Corolla with an 8-megapixel camera and a VGA screen (finally).
