Recently a user, Lori Drew, was charged with a felony for the heinous crime of pretending to be someone else on the Internet. Using the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Lori was charged for signing up for MySpace using a fake name. "The access to MySpace was unauthorized because using a fake name violated the terms of service. The information from a "protected computer" was the profiles of other MySpace users. If this is found to be a valid interpretation of the law, it's really quite frightening. If you violate the Terms of Service of a website, you can be charged with hacking. That's an astounding concept. Does this mean that everyone who uses Bugmenot could be prosecuted? Also, this isn't a minor crime, it's a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment per count.

IconI have been using Linux since 1993. I installed the first version of Slackware on a 16MB 386sx-25. Since then I have been using it almost exclusively on one or more of my PCs. So I consider myself as a bit of an expert. I have been using computers since 1982 mostly PCs, but also VAX mainframes and SPARC systems. Operating systems (and GUIs) I have been using include CP/M, DOS, Windows from Version 2 to XP, Geos, Beos, SCO Unix, Solaris, OS/2 and quite a few Linux Distros.

Michael Heinrichs has written a Sun Developer Network article on Using JavaFX Script Objects in Java Programs. This process is a fairly easy one, he maintains, because JavaFX Script was designed to enable the use of Java objects and because the necessary instruments are built right into the language. He demonstrates possible ways to create JavaFX objects and to use them in Java code. According to Heinrichs, the first issue to address in designing a system that includes components written in JavaFX Script is the decision about which technology to use for the startup. There is, he writes, no correct answer; that depends on the context. He recommends using a factory as a means of creating JavaFX objects from Java code without relying on calling the constructor, which is a practice that is typically discouraged.

TihSon writes "I'm building a large shed out back and I want to power the lighting using a surplus solar panel. In searching for information on how to go about this, I have found a lot of rough DIY guides for various projects that are close to my goal. But none seem to explain the reasoning and theory behind using solar panels, so hacking their project to suit my own needs could be pretty much hit-and-miss. I don't want to do a hacked-up job, and future solar projects are not out of the question, so something a bit more in-depth is required. Do you have suggestions for books or Web sites you have used to learn the ins and outs of using solar panels? Something that starts with basic theory and ends with the ability to wire a house would be perfect.

Broadband Reports points us to a rather unique attempt by Missouri University of Science & Technology to deal with the fact that the RIAA/MPAA are upset with students at the university for using file sharing apps. It's using traffic shaping apps to block access to P2P systems... but, it will give students timed access if they first successfully complete a quiz about copyright issues. You need to get a perfect score (or no BitTorrent for you!) and you get six hours, which they hope you're now using for legal file sharing (though, they don't check). If you want more time, you need to ace the quiz again (the questions change). You can get up to 8 "passes" per month.

I need to update some information related to a post that I made last week about multiple displays with Linux. In a nutshell, I have a laptop and a port replicator with a display connected to it. That gives rise to three basic "states" for display - using the laptop display only (not connected to the port replicator); using the external display only (connected to the port replicator with the laptop lid shut); using both displays simultaneously.

I generally like Forrester's work, but this survey flies in the face of every piece of research on open source that I've seen in the last five years...including research from Forrester. Also, as the research itself finds, often its survey respondents are using open source even when they don't know it: Nearly half of those surveyed by Forrester who are using open-source frameworks (e.g., Spring) still claim they are not using open source.

That is the question that Foamers.net asks. Is it better to build your own custom design or use a template? Personally, I would have to give the wishy-washy answer of "it depends". If you're a good or great designer, then using a template wouldn't make sense. But what if you only have a few hours to get a site up and live? Using a pre-built template might make sense even for a pro designer in that case. Or if you're just starting out, using a template that you're allowed to modify might be a great way to learn Web design and new techniques that you weren't familiar with. But taking the time to build a site from scratch and doing all the testing is one of the best ways to learn HTML, CSS, and Web design.

Google's open-source development tool is seeing adoption grow.SAN FRANCISCO—One of Google's primary goals is to advance the capabilities of the browser and the company has done so with its Gears offline-application-enabling technology. Advancing the browser also means adoption by key players. At the Google I/O conference here May 28, Allen Hurff, vice president of engineering at social networking player MySpace, said MySpace is using Gears to make its site and products easier to use. "It gives you full text capability and a SQL database on the client machine" for local storage, Hurff said. "Today, MySpace is launching enhanced functionality for MySpace mail using Gears," Chris Prince, a Google software engineer, said in a May 28 blog post. "They are using the original Gears Database API with Full Text Search to enable fast and easy search

July 10, 2008 The Sony VRDMC3 DVDirect DVD Recorder does just what its name suggests – it records to DVDs directly from other sources, and it does so without the need for a PC. The VRDMC3 can record from just about any source such as camcorders, DVDs or VCRs, thanks to the provided USB, Firewire, S-Video and composite inputs. In addition to video, still images can be copied directly from memory card to DVD as a slideshow or for photo storage by using the built-in 5-in-1 card reader. PictBridge compatibility allows the unit to interface directly with a printer and images can be previewed using the 2.5-inch colour LCD that sits on top of the unit. Once selections have been made they can be copied to disc using the large "record" located just below the screen.
