Microsoft Expands Program To Bribe Users Into Using Its Search

A few years ago, Bill Gates had indicated that if all else failed in winning over users from Google, Microsoft was prepared to resort to bribing users to use its search engine, rather than the competitors'. Back in May, this plan kicked off for certain product searches, where actual buyers would end up getting cash back. But, that's rather limited to a very specific type of search and very limited results. So, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Microsoft has now opened up a new program, called SearchPerks, which is an attempt to bribe users to use Microsoft's regular search. Of course, the incentive isn't very strong. It only works in Internet Explorer, and you get a tiny number of "points" each time you search, and you need a lot of points to redeem prizes.

News week in review: stupid users, LHC woes, Windows reverse engineering, and more

If you've spent any time working in IT or helping friends and family troubleshoot their PCs, you likely have a low opinion of most users' common sense. A study made public this week confirms what we had long suspected: most users really aren't very smart when it comes to dealing with popups. Despite warnings about the possibility of installing malware, users in a study mindlessly clicked on dialog boxes just to make them go away.

Is AT&T's 3G West Coast Network Down for iPhone Users?

While I have gotten three confirmations, it looks like in Los Angeles, 3G is down. On my iPhone, switching to 3G yields a "No Service" message, cutting off data and voice connections, while on my Windows Mobile Tilt, both EDGE and 3G are working for data and calls. On EDGE, my iPhone switches between AT&T's network and a roaming indicator. Anyone else with problems on the West Coast? Just recently, AT&T had a problem effecting East Coast users. Although a few Windows Mobile smartphone users were effected, a majority of problems being reported came from iPhone users being severed EDGE (2G) and 3G connectivity.

Newber adds second line to iPhone [photos]

FreedomVOICE has launched a beta program for Newber, a combination iPhone app and cellular service. The software allows users to have an additional number on their iPhone, enabling users to have a "business" line without revealing their personal iPhone. Users can also redirect calls meant for the iPhone to nearby cellular or landline phones to either help conserve battery life or in the case of landlines, offer improved reception; users key in a number at a particular location, and the iPhone then marks the place through GPS, allowing calls to be switched over whenever a user is in the vicinity. FreedomVOICE claims that the service is ideal for people experiencing bad reception, and that calls can be handed off without interruptions.

Is Open Source Different In Europe Than In the US?

An anonymous reader writes "The first Europe Open Source Think Tank just concluded and Larry Augustin posted some interesting observations on open source in Europe versus the US. Essentially, he says that users in Europe care more about the open source nature of a product than do US users. US users are just trying to save a buck while European users actually care about access to the source code. Do Slashdot readers observe the same thing? Are the reasons for using open source software different in other parts of the world as well?"

Web users demand privacy, then give it up

Via TechDirt, a less-than-shocking illustration about Web users and our approach to privacy: We say we want it, but do little to obtain it. A survey of privacy attitudes in the U.K. found that 84 percent of Internet users claimed they would not divulge details of their income online. Later in the survey, the same group was asked to divulge their income data. Eighty-seven percent of them did so. Hello, cognitive dissonance!

Anti-Piracy Scam Emails Target BitTorrent Users

A while back, one patent came to light in the poorly termed ‘friendrank’; Google could be profiling social network users. These three patents now bring the series to five in total."
