User Authentication for a Project Management Application

In the last article, we discussed in detail the user creation script. We looked at what information the script gets from the form and how it "cleans" and verifies form values, and then looked at how the user is informed about his or her log-in credentials. In this article, the conclusion to our four-part series, we'll finish the discussion.

Maxis allowing multiple user names per Spore account

While NPD confirms Spore is making a strong debut in the PC gaming scene (but not enough to beat the Sims, surprise!), the road was still a bumpy one thanks to non-gameplay issues which frustrated users. This included DRM which not only capped the number of times Spore could be installed, but prevented players from creating more than one user account per copy of Spore despite what the game's manual clearly states. The latter in particular drew the ire of consumers, and it appears EA got the message. Or at least Maxis did, as the developer confirms that each Spore account will soon be able to host up to five different user names ("Spore Screen Names"). Maxis has posted further details:

Adding Users for a Project Management Application

In the last article we looked at how a user is authenticated and granted access if the login credentials are correct. Now, for any user to log in he or she needs to exist in the database. To put user information in the database we will need scripts through which we can do just that, hence the topic of this article. This is the third part of a four-part series on the authentication details involved in building a project management application.
