Spammer Hiding Techniques

Escaping: This technique uses legal URL formatting to hide the address. Escaping encodes the URL with a percent sign followed by a hexidecimal code. An escaped URL can look like “http://%2E%2E%2E%48%20%18%32%2F%48…”. You can easily decode this by copying it into the location bar of your browser and hitting return. The status area of your browser will usually show you the translated address. If you don’t want to make your browser go the the URL, then you can decode the URL with a good old ASCII translation table. Many of these have decimal, hex, and octal codes for each character. A (New) Bash Script to Download Entire PicasaWeb Albums

"The URL may point to a PicasaWeb album (public or private with the authentication key terminating the URL). You may have received this URL by mail if the author invited you to take a look at her album. It can also be that of a whole gallery, i.e., all public albums of a user. For example, to download every public album of Abhishek, you just need to execute this command:"

Not Screws and Bolts

Find the Debian mirror that is nearest to you (in terms of network connectivity), and set the variable DEBIAN_MIR to contain the URL of this mirror (including the trailing /debian). Browse the sub-URL pool/main/d/debootstrap under $DEBIAN_MIR to locate a recent version of debootstrap, and let DEBOOTSTRAP_URL contain the full URL for this version."

why links are important

I have been browsing with an iPod touch lately (basically an iPhone without the phone) and I've noticed an issue - no cut and paste. This means that if I need to type in a URL I need to type in the URL. I found a site I wanted to point out to you, but the writer had not included any links to any social bookmarking services. The URL is too long for me to remember, and I don't want to write it down and then type it in. It's not that good. While other devices allow copy/paste, it's still true that hitting a link is easier than typing, so I would recomend including them, if you can. (And before you point out that this blog doesn't have social bookmarking links, I know. That's not up to me.)

URL Redirection

What is URL redirection and what does it have to do with your web site? What's more, is it something you might want to use? These questions and others will be answered in this article. So keep reading to become enlightened.

Picasa Unlisted Albums Privacy Issue Fixed

Google’s photo storing app Picasa Web Albums had a bit of a privacy vulnerability. When you create an unlisted album to send to friends, you’ll usually not expect the URL to get out to non-friends – that’s why Google included an authentication key parameter in the URL so it’s not possible to quickly guess the address (they didn’t in the beginning, which allowed you to e.g. see Larry Page’s unlisted album, but Google were later convinced it makes sense). However, Google allowed outgoing links in comments to photos of those unlisted albums. When you entered e.g. “Great photo, also see http://example.com” as a comment just a while ago, Google would automatically create a direct link to Example.com. As you know if you’re a webmaster, when someone clicks such a direct link – i.

Macromedia Policy Statement on Best Practices for Flash Security

This Macromedia policy talks about how one should always verify input from parameters passed to any application, and focus specifically on Flash advertisements that "frequently make use of a clickTAG parameter to allow the HTML pages that contain them to specify the click-through destination URL for the advertisement." A malicious HTML page could be constructed to pass a specially constructed URL parameter containing JavaScript or malicious code. This can all be prevented if you utilize the best practice of always checking your Clicktag parameters to make sure they start with HTTP:.

Google Shows Broken Backlinks

The Google webmaster tools added a feature which lets you see the sources of links which trigger a “file not found” on your site. To try this, click on your site in the dashboard (provided you verified it’s yours) and view Diagnostics -> Web crawl -> Not found. Next to a given unfound URL – say, “http://example.com/archive%3E” – you can click the “pages” link to the right, which pops up a list of sites referencing that URL*. Often the link is just malformed and the error won’t be on your end.

Macromedia Flash URL Modification Issue

There's been a report of a new vulnerability in the Flash Player that could allow maliciously authored Flash content, working in conjunction with other content on a Web server, to read the contents of files from the local file systems of Flash Player users, and send those contents back to Web servers without users' consent or knowledge. This vulnerability is limited to files whose locations and names are known or guessed ahead of time by attackers. An attacker would have to entice the user to a site under his control to exploit this vulnerability. This vulnerability can never be used to modify or delete local files. All Macromedia Flash Players are affected. Macromedia has released new versions of all Flash Players fixing this issue.
