"Like it or not modern operating systems all require updates and patching. Some updates require updates to underlying libraries and utilities. Intelligent systems will download and update those at the same time. By using software that can be freely distributed, then you can take advantage of this kind of intelligent feature. Most GNU/Linux distributions handle this through their package-management tools. The really intelligent ones will warn if you updating a library is going to break other software, and because of the sharing nature of free software that means most GNU/Linux distributions. The mistrusting nature of proprietary software vendors means one package update could break some other software on your system.

"Since updating Java, on startup I get the following message: You can't open the application "Executor" because it requires a version of Java that is not available. This application requires "1.3*" version of Java. The available Java version "1.5" may be able to open this application, but it may not work correctly. There are 2 buttons: "Use 1.5" and "Quit". Pressing either results in the message reappearing several more times. I have reapplied 10.5.5 Combo to no effect.

Mozilla has decided to put the closed beta testing to an end and release Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 for public testing, and to give us a taste of what is about to come. As we reported last week, Google was updating its iPhone mobile application with voice search with availability as early as last Friday. It didn't roll out then but it's now available and after taking it for a spin, it's a nice improvement that makes mobile searching infinitely easier.
