New Firmware Update

June 18, 2008 - If you've happened to hop on to your PS3 recently, you may have noticed that the next firmware update, version 2.36, is now available for download. To clarify, this update is not the recently announced update that will introduce trophies and in-game XMB support, but rather a simpler update to improve certain games' stability. At the time this article was written, no specific date has been assigned to the upcoming version 2.40 which will deliver the aforementioned new features.

Sony has updated their Playstation blog with a boatload of info on the next system update for the Playstation 3, version 2.4. The update will bring several new features we've already mentioned such as trophies and the ability to play music in-game, but that's not all: the new update will also support XMB access inside games. Like the PSP, the 2.4 update will also include Google support via XMB. Sony has posted a video walkthrough highlighting the new XMB, as well as a 2nd video dedicated to the trophy system.

Wii Update 3.3 Defeats Twilight Hack, Freeloader

Richter X writes "The newest update to the Nintendo Wii's Menu, version 3.3, contains code specifically designed to find and kill the popular Twilight Hack used by homebrewers to play unauthorized code on the Wii. The update also prevents the Freeloader software used to play imported games on the Wii. However, it does not seem to affect the Homebrew Channel in Wiis that already have it installed. The updated code is currently being researched in order to find what code has been changed. So far it has been confirmed that Nintendo included specific instructions to target the Twilight Hack. Work is also being done to update the Twilight Hack in order to bypass this new code."

No Xbox 360 spring update this year?

No Xbox 360 spring update this year? A week ago we reported about a list of features leaked to Kotaku that were supposedly part of an Xbox 360 Spring Dashboard Update. It turns out, however, that the leaked feature list is a fake as Microsoft just confirmed there’ll be no spring update for the console’s system software this year – or at least not in the form of any significant change to the dashboard. Though news will certainly come as a major disappointment to many Xbox 360 owners, Microsoft still has some modifications and general housekeeping planned for its console.

Big problems for PS3 update 2.40

Here’s the theory: Sony creates a firmware update designed to enhance the PS3’s functionality and, more to the point, your gaming pleasure. The process of doing so should, in theory again, involve thoroughly testing the update in order to wheedle out every last nasty bug so that the update is 100% stable when it’s finally released. So that’s the theory. Can you see where we’re going with this yet...?

The Washington Post reports, 'The computer in question was used to monitor chemical and diagnostic data from one of the facility's primary control systems, and the software update was designed to synchronize data on both systems. According to a report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, when the updated computer rebooted, it reset the data on the control system, causing safety systems to errantly interpret the lack of data as a drop in water reservoirs that cool the plant's radioactive nuclear fuel rods. As a result, automated safety systems at the plant triggered a shutdown.
