In an overlooked USA Today article from Friday, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson and "insider sources" quietly all but confirmed that the company has retained exclusive rights to the iPhone until 2010. The previous exclusivity agreement with Apple had AT&T retaining the rights until 2009. The article implies AT&T managed to negotiate the extension thanks in part to the subsidized $200/$300 iPhone 3G's it's eating by the hundreds of thousands right now. In the article, Stephenson declined to discuss the specifics of the new contract with Apple. He did admit that he is "very happy" with the new arrangement, however. This is bad news for you folks holding out for more iPhone carriers in the US market. Now you'll apparently have to wait a little longer.

rufey writes "The recent problems at the Large Hadron Collider will now keep it idle until spring 2009. The official press release is here. The LHC went offline due to a suspected failure in a superconducting connection, which overheated and caused around 100 of the LHC's super-cooled magnets to heat up by as much as 100 degrees. This resulted in the accidental release of a ton of liquid helium. The process required to repair the failed superconducting connection involves weeks of warming up the affected area from -456 degrees Fahrenheit to room temperature, and then several more weeks to cool it back down after the repair is made. The total amount of time to do this will spill over into CERN's scheduled winter maintenance/shutdown period, which is partly done to save money on electricity during the period of peak demand.

It looks as thought the magnet situation that shut down the LHC last week is going to take even more time to correct than previously feared. In order to fully investigate the problem, researchers have decided to hold off a restart until sometime in the spring of 2009. Robert Aymar, director-general of CERN called the situation "a psychological blow," but getting this beast is in good working order must be the top priority. Apparently, the fire department rushed to the scene after a little over a ton of liquid helium leaked into LHCs super-long tunnel, causing around 100 of the magnets to overheat. Take your time guys—we don't need any more drama with a device that could bring down the world. [BBC]

The latest round of emotion comes over reports -- yes, new ones -- that Google's mobile offering is being delayed once again. This time, a Web site called Barron's Tech Trader Daily published a note from an equity firm saying handset maker HTC is having "structural problems" integrating Android into its devices. As such, the note implies, the phones could be pushed back until early 2009. The document quotes some unnamed "contacts" as revealing the news.

"In government circles, the term information assurance is used often. We've also heard terms like trustworthy computing, reliable systems, and others. For these to be successful, they must all have at their core a common principle of guilty until proven innocent. I'll explain with a few examples as well as counter-examples."
