A special thanks to commenter "tamade" for pointing out the obvious. Since AT&T's unlocked iPhone 3Gs will cost you $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB), you are better off signing a contract and canceling it than buying an unlocked iPhone. In fact, it's even cheaper to buy a 16GB iPhone using this method than to buy and unlock an 8GB version. But math isn't our strong suit so go ahead and double-check our calculations. We won't be offended:

Karl Phillips writes, "Accidentally leaving my XBOX360 unplugged from my power outlet, my internal clock was wiped clean and my date and time were reverted back to the XBOX360's launch date. Without realizing this, I fired up the Too Human demo without signing into XBOX Live only to see both the Berserker and Commando classes were unlocked for use. It seems as long as the date remains 11-22-2005, those classes will be unlocked. Look on for screenshots of these classes unlocked…"

People with unlocked iPhone and iPod Touch gadgets are happy to find that they can now share music and media files through a new application. Songs can be downloaded via a p2p network with the average Wi-Fi download speed being approximately three minutes. Movie downloads are taking a little over an hour on the average iPhone using this new application. Download speeds are about twice as fast for those people using the AT&T EDGE network rather than a standard Wi-Fi connection. The application is still in beta, the speeds aren't good enough for most people and there are apparently some bugs to work out but people who love their iPhones feel that this is a step in the right direction for media sharing.

A Hamburg court has ruled on Tuesday that T-Mobile Germany, a unit of iPhone-T-MobileDeutsche Telekom AG, need not sell an unlocked version of Apple's iPhone. Some of the details surrounding AT&T's iPhone prices make little sense, writes Eric Benderoff. The company will sell a 3G iPhone with no contract for a $400 premium. Unlocked phones aren't uncommon, but that $599 iPhone will only be unlocked from a contract, not from the carrier -- it'll still have to use AT&T. Why not just buy the $199 version and pay the $175 early contract termination fee?

With the iPhone 3G, AT&T and other carriers around the world will be tying all buyers into contracts, possibly stopping the flow of unlocked phones. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, file)

As hackers get more sophisticated, the time it takes them to unlock devices such as the iPhone becomes shorter and shorter. Much as with DRM on CDs and DVDs, the question must be asked: are companies like AT&T and Apple simply hurting honest consumers in their quest to hang onto a monopoly?
