"An archiving error by NASA has meant 173 data tapes have sat in Perth for almost 40 years, holding information about lunar dust that could be vital in expanding science's understanding of the moon. But after almost four decades, a donation from a Sydney computer society looks set to breathe fresh life into a long-neglected field of lunar science. ... These were the only active measurements of moon dust made during the Apollo missions, and no-one thought it was important. ... Mr Holmes has kept the tapes in a climate-controlled room since then, and it was only when he stumbled upon a 1960s IBM729 Mark 5 tape drive at the Australian Computer Museum that his company had the ability to unlock the information."

The pam_mount project lets you unlock an encrypted filesystem automatically when you log in. The same password used to log in is used as the key to unlock the encrypted filesystem, so you only need to type it once. Using this method, you can easily share a laptop and have only a single user's home directory unlocked and mounted when he logs in. And pam_mount can mount any filesystem, not just encrypted filesystems, so you can use it, for example, with an NFS share that you are interested in but which you might not like to leave mounted when you are not logged in.

iPhone and 3G handsets unlocked with a PIG - GeoSIM, the specialist international SIM card supplier has introduced the “SIM PIG”, a SIM Card like chip that bypasses the network lock on mobile phones, thus enabling any SIM card from any network to be used in a locked handset. SIM PIG can unlock difficult or expensive to unlock modern 3G handsets such as iPhone, Windows Mobile devices, HTC, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Blackberry and many more. The SIM PIG is inserted with the SIM card into the handsets SIM card slot. The PIG then dynamically bypasses the network lock on the mobile phone. SIM PIG does not affect any of the handsets functionality and all features are maintained, importantly it does not invalidate any warranty on the handset.
