Could a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360 finally be on the horizon, despite constant denials from Redmond? If X-bit Labs is to be believed, a joint-venture between Toshiba and Samsung has been contracted to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for Microsoft's game console. According to their market sources, the company is aiming at a $100 to $150 price point in order to compete with the PlayStation 3. If the news is true, it's a complete 180 from Robbie Bach's announcement back in June. [X-bit Labs]

"Apple is gearing up for a music announcement [on September 9th]. The trouble is, nobody in music appears to know anything about it. My sources say that they don't expect Apple to announce anything to do with music content, and they are sure Apple won't be rolling out an iTunes music subscription service," Greg Sandoval reports for CNET.

Whoever said talk was cheap hasn’t been following the action at Cablevision: Shares of the Long Island-based cable operators have staged a strong rally in recent months, courtesy of the Dolan family’s jib-jabbing and jawboning alone. But don’t expect the fun to continue says Citi analyst Jason Bazinet, who downgraded the stock today. Despite the fact that activist Harbinger has taken an 8.1 percent stake in the company, class A shareholders (non-Dolans) don’t have the muscle to force anything, like an asset sale. Even though the top non-Dolan shareholders are consolidating their grip (besides Harbinger, top firms like Gamco and Clearbride have added to their stake), the Dolan’s control of the Class B shares ensures that they’ll retain 73 percent of the voting power.

In November 2006, Redmond, WA-based Microsoft and Waltham, MA-based Novell surprised the software world by announcing that Microsoft would market Novell’s version of the Linux operating system to its own customers, and that the two companies would set up an “Interoperability Lab” in Cambridge, MA. Nearly two years later, the partnership is still in place, and today the old rivals—Microsoft nearly wiped out Novell in the early 1990s—said that they’re extending it to the tune of $100 million.
