Robotic Fish Track Targets, Communicate With One Another

Roland Piquepaille writes "Many of today's underwater robots need to periodically come up to the surface to communicate with their human supervisors. But researchers at the University of Washington (UW) have developed a new kind of underwater vehicle. The 'Robofish' can work cooperatively with each other. 'The Robofish, which are roughly the size of a 10-pound salmon, look a bit like fish because they use fins rather than propellers.' According to the researchers, such robots 'could cooperatively track moving targets underwater, such as groups of whales or spreading plumes of pollution, or explore caves, underneath ice-covered waters, or in dangerous environments where surfacing might not be possible.' Further information and more pictures are also available for these autonomous fin-actuated underwater vehicles.

First Underwater Neutrino Telescope Has Been Constructed

Construction of the first underwater neutrino telescope has just been completed. Since early June, the last two detection lines of Antares have been probing the bottom of the Mediterranean for neutrinos of cosmic origin. There are now 12 detection lines aimed at observing these elementary particles, which provide insight into the most violent phenomena in the Universe.

California Squid Fishery Uses JW Fishers Underwater Camera

JW Fishers' (East Taunton, Massachusetts) DV-1 underwater camera is being used to quantify the number of eggs being produced by California squid fisheries. This drop video system has a high- resolution camera mounted on a 250-foot depth-rated housing equipped with two powerful 100-watt tungsten halogen lights. The DV-1 is lowered close to the bottom and observers can see the size and distribution of the gelatinous egg beds far below. This provides researchers with hard data on the health and sustainability of the squid population, said the company.
