Build Your Own Oracle Extended RAC Cluster on Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Linux

A typical Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) deployment is an architecture that provides fast recovery from a single or multiple-node failures. But in a typical scenario, all nodes of Oracle RAC are located in a single data center and thus prone to catastrophic data center failure. The solution for achieving disaster recovery in this scenario is to set up Oracle DataGuard between the local data center and some backup data center where standby systems are running (typically a single Oracle database or another RAC cluster).

RealtyBid.com Tapped To Auction 2,000+ Foreclosures In One Month

RISMEDIA, Oct. 6, 2008-In the wake of the country’s current financial crisis, RealtyBid.com, an online home auction firm, has been tapped to auction more than 2,000 properties during the month of October for one of the nation’s top lenders. According to RealtyBid.com CEO/President Tony Isbell, this volume of properties represents an increase of more than three times the typical volume of REO homes (bank-owned foreclosures) auctioned via RealtyBid.com for this particular bank client during a typical month.

A method of simplified computational modeling of oxidation of hydrocarbons is undergoing development. This is one of several developments needed to enable accurate computational simulation of turbulent, chemically reacting flows. At present, accurate computational simulation of such flows is difficult or impossible in most cases because (1) the numbers of grid points needed for adequate spatial resolution of turbulent flows in realistically complex geometries are beyond the capabilities of typical supercomputers now in use and (2) the combustion of typical hydrocarbons proceeds through decomposition into hundreds of molecular species interacting through thousands of reactions. Hence, the combination of detailed reaction-rate models with the fundamental flow equations yields flow models that are computationally prohibitive.

THOUGHT: Install Windows XP on Netbooks from your Windows Mobile Smartphone

This week I got my hands on LG's brand new and recently released LG X110 Netbook with embedded HSDPA which I want to test as an alternative to the HTC Shift UMPC. Since the LG X110 sports a massive 160 GB hard disk drive, I planned to partition it into two drives, C: and D: which I do with most of my PCs and Notebooks anyway. While C: holds the operating system (in this case Netbook-typical Windows XP only) and programs, D: is used to store all my documents. The benefit is that I don't have to take care about my documents in case I have to re-install the operating system because D: isn't formatted or deleted but C: only. However, since the LG X110 is a typical Netbook, it doesn't features an inbuilt optical drive which makes installation of an OS a little bit more difficult.

Updated: Carriers Report Text Messaging Surge Following Election Results

imageTurns out Barack Obama’s campaign wasn’t the only one using text messaging during the elections. Wireless subscribers used election day to send them, as well, leading to at least a 10 percent spike above normal, according to three of the top four U.S. carriers. All the carriers extrapolated data a little differently, but they all recorded a bump. On Sprint’s CDMA network, the carrier saw 21 percent higher volume in text messaging nationwide than it had the previous four Tuesdays. Verizon (NYSE: VZ) saw a 21 percent jump in SMS traffic from a typical Tuesday as well; it also said MMS traffic was up 10 percent. Finally, T-Mobile said it experienced holiday-like SMS traffic levels, which were up about 10 percent from a typical day.

ToughSkin for iPhone 3G - Review

Imagine your typical morning routine, hurriedly typing an email response to your boss as you stand in line at the local Starbucks when the unimaginable happens. The customer ahead of you swings their book bag over their shoulder, connecting with the most important part of your body, the arm holding your brand new iPhone 3G. Suddenly, caffeine is forgotten, and your world enters an agonizing slow motion view of your prized possession about to slam into the polished floor.

Study: Too Many 401(k) Choices Can Lead to More Risky Investments

p>The typical 401(k) plan offered 18 funds choices last year. Savvy investors often relish the array of options and seek out the lowest fees and best returns. But for an inexperienced retirement saver, confusing terms, fine print, and seemingly indecipherable differences between mutual funds can seem daunting. And new research indicates that too many choices in a 401(k) may even lead inexperienced investors to take on more risk than they would with fewer options.

A Rutgers School of Business, University of Texas-Austin, and University of Pittsburgh study found that many employees without extensive investment knowledge will choose a heavier concentration of stocks in their portfolio when confronted with more fund options. A large fund assortment more than doubled investment in stocks among those less knowledgeable, from 29 percent t

Telescope Dreams-- PBS' Journey to Palomar

A seemingly typical moment in PBS' fascinating new documentary, "Journey to Palomar" comes about halfway through the film. George Ellery Hale, the American astronomer who is the subject of the documentary, is fresh off a nervous breakdown. He is recovering in Italy when he learns that one of the richest men in history just gave a sizable chunk of cash to help Hale realize his latest dream -- finishing the 100-inch Hooker telescope atop Mount Wilson near Pasadena, CA.

How online games are solving uncomputable problems

ARISTIDES is a typical 13-year-old boy. He plays basketball after school, is learning the clarinet, and in the evening sits in front of his computer playing games. There is one game that he is especially keen on, however, which marks him out from his peers. Every day he logs on to www.fold.it, where, under the nickname "Cheese", he plays a game that involves twisting, pulling and wiggling a 3D structure that looks a bit like a tree's root system. He manipulates different lengths of these snaking green tubes until they fit into the smallest volume possible. It may sound like a rather bizarre game - a distant 3D relative of Tetris, perhaps - but it is in fact a brilliant disguise for one of the toughest conundrums facing biologists today: how do proteins fold?

Full-size Roman siege artillery offered on eBay

Movie Review: Guy Ritchie returns to his trademark brash form with 'RocknRolla'

For better and for worse, "RocknRolla" is a pretty typical Guy Ritchie movie: intentionally convoluted plotting, eccentric underworld characters, hyperstylized editing and, of course, a killer soundtrack.
