Twitter is a social networking platform that keeps you in conversation by allowing you and your friends to follow each others' updates. The service lets users post and read 140-character updates, called tweets. With Twitter, you can do social networking on the fly, from your mobile phone or at your desktop, from a Web browser or a Twitter client. Twitter clients make the service more usuable by automatically checking for updates from your friends and allowing you to easily post your own updates. I tested four Twitter clients for Linux on a desktop running Ubuntu Hardy Heron.

Micro-blogging sites are everywhere these days. There's Jaiku, FriendFeed, Pownce, Tumblr, and Identi.ca, to name a few. For many, though, the original micro-blogging site is the best: Twitter. It certainly has the biggest userbase, if nothing else. If you don't know what micro-blogging is and how it is different from regular blogging, check out one of the many online Twitter introductions. One thing that has helped Twitter become as popular as it has is the Twitter API. For users of Twitter, this ability for nearly any developer to create applications that work with the service means that in addition to posting via a browser or my cell phone, I can post from a score of different Desktop applications.

My gut response to this question is "No," and according to Totus Internet Marketing that's true. But even if Twitter doesn't help you with SEO it can be a good marketing tool if you are willing to take the time to use it well. Just setting up an RSS feed into Twitter won't help. In fact, it will only attract the attention of other spammers. But if you are willing to join the conversation you can use Twitter to also market your website. My rule of thumb, try to keep the automated posts to around 1 for every 3-5 real posts you send. And remember to reply to people. You can't expect people to interact with you if you don't interact with them. Follow me on Twitter.

Twitter is a fun service that lets you keep in touch with your friends and other people you only wish you knew. Like many people, I've come to rely on it as a backchannel that keeps me in touch with my colleagues and friends in ways that email and instant messaging simply can't. And since the iPhone was first released, I've used Web interfaces to Twitter to read and post Twitter items, known as "tweets," when I'm on the go.

Twitter FailwhaleMicroblogging service Twitter is downgrading its service for users in the UK. Brits, who were previously limited to receiving 250 texts a week, will no longer be able to receive any updates by SMS. That's right, zero. In an email to users and blog post, Biz Stone says it's the money. "Even with a limit of 250 messages received per week, it could cost Twitter about $1,000 per user, per year to send SMS outside of Canada, India, or the US." Is this the beginning of the end for the much-vaunted app?

No, I don't want to use Twitter. I'm way too busy—and, let's be honest, too uninterested (and uninteresting)—to spend all day thumb-typing status updates from my cell phone. That's the problem with Web 2.0 services like Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Digg, and the rest: They expect me to eagerly upload, type, click, and tweet my life onto the Internet so these tidbits can be served to others. What I really want is to be able to reap the advantages of these sites without having to lift a finger—to see what my friends are up to without having to write anything myself.

Back in January of this year I signed up for a Twitter account. I have to admit I was skeptical. Why does anyone need to know what I am doing right now? I wrote a blog about how silly I thought it was. Then after playing around with Twitter for about five months I wrote another blog about how it had the potential for becoming a platform for innovation. So, clearly, I had changed my mind. I began to see that something here was more interesting than what I had assumed.

It's quite common these days for people to "live blog" or "live Twitter" different conferences or events they're attending, filling in others what's happening in near real time. However, what happens when someone does that in a college class? Already, there are some professors struggling with the fact that students use the internet during class, but they're not at all happy about the idea that they might not just be using the internet to surf around -- but to report to others what's happening inside the classroom. The issue is discussed in detail by Mark Glaser in his latest MediaShift column after an NYU professor told her students to stop blogging or Twittering things about her class.

The web is an increasingly chatty place. Between following comment threads, checking in with friends on Twitter, reading a few blogs with RSS feeds, and conquering a mountain of e-mail, we have plenty of conversations to keep track of. Mozilla wants to help us on the conversational journey, which is why the company has launched Snowl, a new tool that offers a small glimmer of hope for those seeking communications nirvana.

Eye-Fi gets it. What started as a simple SD card with Wi-Fi transfer and geotagging is fast turning into a full-on Web 2.0 gadget. Now, when you upload photos direct from your camera to Flickr (or any other supported online storage), you can opt to have a tweet sent to your Twitter followers, or publish an RSS feed so anyone can subscribe to the full fire-hose of your daily snaps.

Eye-Fi keeps kicking ass with their wireless SD cards, adding upload support for Flickr and feed publishing capabilities through Twitter and RSS — all in a software update. It was only a few weeks ago that another downloadable upgrade boosted download speeds and threw in MobileMe support, albeit for a fee. Owners should get an Eye-Fi Manager Software update pushed through automatically, and new customers can now find the cards on the Eye-Fi website. Note to other hardware manufacturers: DO MORE STUFF LIKE THIS. [Eye-Fi via Crave]
