Contrary to the popular trend of 'going digital', I am considering buying a medium-format camera. Although I have been looking at the various makes and models, I am finding it difficult to make a choice. I plan to try my hand at portrait, wedding and landscape photography, and want an entry-level kit that will be user friendly, deliver good results and not blow a hole in my bank balance. I am willing to buy second-hand, but would not want to spend more than £500. What would you advise?

It's the eternal trend. Internet Explorer keeps losing ground, Firefox keeps gaining. Not even after Internet Explorer 7 Microsoft managed to affect the big trend. Firefox has remained steady in growth and by the end of 2008 it was up to a record high 20.78% while Internet Explorer hit a record low of 69.77%, according to NetApplications' measurements. NetApplications lists various reasons for this, all pointing to that people have been browsing more from home, rather than from work, which of course implies that many companies are using IE rather than FF, despite the security history of the two.

CWmike writes "The worm exploiting a critical Windows bug that Microsoft patched with an emergency fix in late October is now being used to build a fast-growing botnet, said Ivan Macalintal, a senior research engineer with Trend Micro. Dubbed 'Downad.a' by Trend (and 'Conficker.a' by Microsoft and 'Downadup' by Symantec), the worm is a key component in a massive new botnet that a new criminal element, not associated with McColo, is creating. 'We think 500,000 is a ballpark figure,' said Macalintal when asked the size of the new botnet. 'That's not as large as some, such as [the] Kraken [botnet], or Storm earlier, but it's... starting to grow.'"

Open-ness in hardware terms can have a whole range of meanings. In all the cases listed below, some hardware is open and some is not - but the trend is for open-ness to become more and more limited, restricting the freedom of designers to create or implement their own designs, and even of programmers to write the programs they wish. It sounds crazy that people could sell hardware and not tell you how to use it, but it is actually a growing trend. If a company sells any device which interfaces to a computer without publishing the interface specs, they then have a monopoly on interface software. WinModems and WinPrinters - which also cannot be supported by Linux - are a related problem. This aspect of open-ness in hardware is so closely linked with work on free software that the FSF, Debian, and FreeBSD are all among the sponsors for the Op
